Toko merah (red shop) (formerly: Huis van de gouverneur-generaal Baron van Imhoff) (1730)

Toko Merah was built in 1730 as the residence of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies Gustaaf Willem baron van Imhoff (1743-1750) above a 2.471 square meter plot. From 1743 to 1755, the building served as a Navy Academy (Dutch Academie de Marine), reputed to be the oldest navy academy in Asia.

Afterwards, this building changed its ownership several times. It has been a residence of other Governor General of Batavia: Jacob Mossel (1750–1761), Petrus Albertus van der Parra (1761–1775), Reynier de Klerck (1777–1780), Nicolaas Hartingh, and Baron von Hohendorff.

The building was converted into a hotel from 1786 to 1808; the manager of the hotel built rows of carriage houses and stables to keep the hotel's eight carriages and its sixteen horses. These additional buildings were later converted into row houses. During the period, the building Toko Merah also provided six boats on the Kali Besar to transport goods from the Sunda Kelapa harbor. The In 1851, the building was purchased by Oey Liauw Kong, Kapitein der Chinezen of Batavia, for use as his residence and shop, and was painted red, and so it was known as Toko Merah.

The building was the office for the Bank voor Indië between 1920-1940. After the independence of Indonesia, it became an office for various state-owned enterprises e.g. PT. Satya Niaga (1972)

Terima kasih banyak Kemo123!! These are all extremely interesting pictures you have posted! Especially interesting for me were the pictures of Jakarta Kota were an office building can be seen on former Town Hall Square which roof collapsed some years ago, but is being restored to its former glory.

The Building "Assurantie Maatschappij der Nederlanden" was built by the well-known architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage. He designed also an office building in Surabaya, situated at Jembatan Merah (Rode Brug)
The buildings of 'De Bouwploeg N.V.' and the 'Bataviasche Kunstkring' were designed by Piet Mooijen, one of the first professional architects active in Indonesia from 1903 onwards.

Yes the building collasped in 2011 if i wasnt mistaken, currently 7 buildings are being renovated including fully restoring collasped structure next to hotel batavia. So there's some activities but not on major scale because there is ownership issue, and today leaving old structure deterioriating will be fined. Although progress is rather slow and the retiviliation plan didn't cover weltevreden in the south, i am hoping to see full restored old buildings like nillmij (which is shamingly are partially demolished) and some other still intact but modified structure along noordwijk\veteran.

Yes i've noticed his work in roodebrug, beautiful building indeed like jakarta surabaya left most of its colonial structure deterioriating... Which is unfortunate considering the number of surviving old structure is greater than jakarta.

Paleis te Buitenzorg

The original colonial building on the site of Istana Bogor was a mansion named Buitenzorg (also Sans Souci), which was built from August 1744 as a country retreat for the Dutch Governors, including also during the period of British administration. Notable occupants of the mansion include Herman Willem Daendels and Sir Stamford Raffles.

This building was substantially damaged by an earthquake in 1834, triggered by the volcanic eruption of Mount Salak. The palace was rebuilt into its present form in 1856— this time with only one storey instead of the original three, as a precaution against further earthquakes.

From 1870 to 1942 the Istana Bogor served as the official residence of the Dutch Governors General. After Indonesian independence, the palace was much used by President Sukarno, but then largely neglected by Suharto when he came to office.

Thanks again Kevo for the very beautiful pictures! I am positively surprised that many colonial buildings that are public property are being restored to its former glory, and in the 'right' way. Let's hope that private owners will become aware of the valuable architecture too. Let's imagine the fully restored old towns of Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan. I'm sure they would become a big draw for national and international tourism, perhaps also for cruise ship tourism.

I have also a more specific question. So far I haven't been able to visit Indonesia, but I am quite curious to know how many colonial villas have been preserved in the Jakarta district of Menteng. This was the first designed garden town in the 1920s and 1930s. The most impressive houses with two floors are situated in the streets around Taman Suropati like Jalan Cimahi, and the Paulus Church (formerly Nassaukerk, which you posted here). Do they still exist?

The Nillmij building at Jl. Veteran (formerly Noordwijk) was indeed an important building from the point of view of architecture history. It was built by Piet Mooijen in 1909 as one of the first modern buildings in Jakarta. As I understand, the front facade was shaven off in the 1970s in order to widen the street, but the side facades should be still visible. I share your vision of completely restoring it, and personally I would like to see the restoration of Hotel des Galeries as well, and reconstructing the Societeit Harmonie on a slightly different place.

Well the governor apperently have been busy gathering permits and acquisition of old houses around Menteng and Cikini, there's about 1281 houses which are still intact. (whether those include houses which have been modified i do not know) Ohh and it was called Nassaukerk rather than Pauluskerk if i wasn't mistaken, anyway not all of the houses survives unfortunately... but you can still see those house you would see on the old photos such as this:
http://street-view.bg360.net/downloa...;70;-1.17;4.88

Or modified old house:
http://street-view.bg360.net/downloa...4;-164.65;3.84

and even the modernist house you see on old Jakarta videos on youtube:
http://street-view.bg360.net/downloa....4;167.25;4.19

With google street view its easier to monitor the old buildings As far concerned the number of old Dutch houses in Menteng is still dominant, despite having to standing side by side to new houses on most occasion, and apart from Jakarta, a whole neighborhood around other cities such as Bandung, Malang and Yogyakarta also survived on a better scale than Jakarta.

Medan is pretty much screwed as compared to the cities in Java... in my opinion, but the old houses around Kesawan is still around and many of the offices still stand.

And i definitely support restoration of partially demolished structure such as Nilmij in Jakarta and Ned-Handels maatschappij in Surabaya... its extremely annoying to see old buildings in such disgusting condition because of ignorant selfish people. Hotel des galleries just need few renovation and it will look as old as it was, the renovation done was disgusting but the overal structure is still intact. As for Societeit Harmonie, that would be slightly harder since its original position is being used for road and parking lots for the government building. There is talk of restoring the Amsterdam gate, but i don't really see any progress... we'll see if by 2018 the oldtown and other old buildings will be fully restored for visitor of Asian games.

Thanks a lot for your information! I shall use streetview for a virtual tour through Menteng. I'm happy to read that there are stil 1281 historic houses in the area!
