Despite the proverbial empty lots that disfigure many American cities, surely the downtown area of Detroit is worthy of a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is such a treasure house of American architecture, particularly from the 1900-1940 era when nothing but the finest quality was the order of construction.

Very good photos of a once great city.
I agree with that

Detroit looks beautiful in these pictures. But a bit empty.

Thanks guys. I guess Detroit is just one of those places where you need to look alittle harder to find the good.

Great thread, and eye-opening. American rust-belt towns (I guess Detroit is part of the rust belt) are fascinating. The history, as shown in your pictures of numerous statues, looks really interesting.

The automobile insustry has been trying to ruin Detroit for a long time, now the automobile industry is in ruin and they have succeded at the same time. Its a shame on this grand old architecture.

The Detroit River is so Blue! And a very pretty tone of it.

I guess that's since it is a waterway connecting two major lakes, it doesn't carry as much sediments as most rivers do.

Detroit is awesome. I have a feeling that when the economy of the city centre rebounds (and it certainly will at some point), it will instantly become one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country. I am also fascinated by suburban Detroit and all the towns even further out. A very robust region, economically and culturally, that frankly does not get the type of recognition it deserves as a whole.

interesting shots. Detriot is still one of America's great cities.
I was thinking if there are some enterprising companies to boost tourism on like cheap package deal like what Flight Center is doing that would be great. There are lots of historical and interesting heritage buildings in the city. Perhaps they can revive the music industry too.
It really breaks my heart to see all those beautiful turn-of-the-century buildings falling apart.

Me too! I wish we had saved our old Central Market. Sadly it was leveled for a bus station!
