I've been going for a few years straight now. This year is supposed to be better since the industry is doing better and most of the companies that skipped last year are coming back this year. I've heard next years should be even better since many of the upgrades at Cobo Hall will be done.

I've never been, although I wouldn't mind going as long as I have someone to go with.

Do I need formal dress?

No, that picture was just the private party.
When it's opened to the public it's about $12 and you can wear anything.

I'm thinking of going during the afternoon/evening sometime this week. I've been going for the last 11-ish years and always love it. I usually park at the Joe as it's super easy to just take the offramp right into the parking structure. I believe the wings are out of town till saturday so they shouldn't be turning anyone away.

Yes, I remember going in 2005, it was a great time. Learned a lot about cars, and the best part, sitting and looking like I'm driving in a $219,000 Bentley.

I just read a rather disturbing and perhaps biased article about Detroit. Since I've never had the pleasure, I thought I'd inquire with those more in the know, i.e. this thread.

According to this article, the city is beleaguered by incredibloe violence and falling apart.

http://www.shtfplan.com/headline-new...up-79_02102012

How legitimate are these claims?

I think the you need to consider the source of that information, which seems to be one of those rag publications that like to to sensationalize, and deal in a tone which is like a hysterical individual that needs to be bitch slapped to calm them down.

it’s gotten so bad in Detroit that there are areas of the city where police and emergency services personnel refuse to go.
That's a lie. Police and emergency services are certainly lacking, but there aren't any neighborhoods or blocks where they "refuse" to go...

Budget cuts, economic woes and a rising criminal element throughout our country are leaving the populace more susceptible to violent crime than ever before.
Violent crime in the city was actually down in 2011. The first 6 months of 2011 saw a 24% drop in violent crime compared to 2010 and 2010 saw a drop of 7% compared to 2009. So, that's not true either...

Isn't the building in the photo 4th from the bottom with the name Mince at the top one of the ones that were just bought and scheduled for a rehabbing project?
