Anyway, that map would be much better without all those country names. Just look at Slovenia.

London to Vienna is 13.5 hours according to Hafas.

Btw, those "exclaves" in Eastern Europe don't make sense. You're faster in Smolensk (Russia) than in eastern Belarus?

I beg to differ. Paris is a whole lot better connected by rail than Vienna. And so are several other cities in western Europe. The central location in Europe counts very little for Vienna without proper high-speed connections.

Yes, the map illustrates the asymetry of European rail networks. You notice that anywhere west of Frankfurt, the map colors are decisively wider than elsewhere, as then you are in the only area that could count as having a real high-speed network (roughly Amsterdam-Marseille and side branches). Looking eastwards, one notices that the same color lines are very narrow, as all countries east of Hungary have just ridiculously slow operating speeds.
I would second the notion that Vienna is not the city which is connected to the rest of the continent by the fastest connections. However, it is still doing fairly well as far as night trains is concerned, which is a major advantage when traveling times are not state of the art.

Night trains shouldn't count, they are a niche that offers sub-par transportation in slower trains.

Unless you get off in Orsha. But yes, I get it, it's just a mistake.

Only if you consider HSR the only train option these days. That of course is not the case. Paris is better connected to Western Europe, while Vienna trumps Paris in Central Europe.

Of course not, but with it you get further in the same time frame and thus a similar map from Paris would cover a greater area.

The Eurostar to London from Paris is 2 hours, and you can reach the midlands/northern England on the Midland Mainline from St Pancras International or East Coast Mainline next door from Kings Cross in under 4 hours.

I guess Frankfurt/Main is even better connected than both Paris or Vienna.

From my perspective, I'd say the bins they chose are a bit misleading. For example, if something takes 125 minutes, it will end up in the bin 2-4 hours, even though, for the purpose of the map, it may as well be lumped into the 0-2 hours bin.

I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but they may have been wiser to go on half hours (e.g. 0-1.5, 1.5-2.5, etc).

No. Paris to London is three hours. Don't forget the silly check in and security theatre that makes the trip artificially longer.

Paris to Madrid fastest time is 9:55 but they have it in the 12-14 group.

Paris to Milan fastest time is 7:12 but they have it in the 8-10 group.

I suspect that time is included to get from some central point in Paris to the station. But for that it would probably be better to calculate with a speed of 15 kph...

The Ph.D candidate who plotted these maps has a website where you can get maps for all 25 cities he made maps, and also read the methodology: http://emptypipes.org/2015/05/20/europe-isochrone-map/
