The searchlights have long been a feature of the Royal Bank HQ. All that happened in the 60s was that when the Royal Bank relocated "uptown" to its new HQ at Place Ville Marie, it brought the searchlights with it, and they made them revolve. I've always liked this too.

I don't recall that the Sun Life Building ever had feature searchlights similar to the RB HQ. This sounds like a simple mix-up with the old RB HQ in Old Montreal.

I like 1 PVM, but my favourite office tower in Montreal (and perhaps Canada) is Tour de la Bourse.

me too, Tour de la Bourse is timeless! I feel you can see PVM's age these days.

I am curious how they would go about re-cladding it. It is a sensitive matter, the building is designed by IM Pei. So, they would have to re-clad it preserving its original look.

I just learnt that PVM was drawn up by a Chinese American

Here's what the site looked like before, plus it would appear the station used to be called Mount Royal Station -- some 49 years, they waited to build atop it all!

It's a real beaut, and still pretty breathtaking after all these decades!!!

Ain't it?

However, I don't know about the '49 years' part because Gare Centrale itself was opened during the war ('42, I think)

No other office towers represents the city like PVM does Montreal. It's the only office tower in the country where if you were to set it apart everyone would know what the city is.
Also with all the green/blue glass towers going up it is a beacon, a beauty, and an icon.

It turns out there's little unique about the PVM beacon. For instance, Chicago had the Lindbergh Beacon that supposedly was moved to L.A.
