Cotati SMART Station with wildflowers. The station now has solar panels and the lot is open as a park and ride.

There is already service to Sunnyvale and Mountain View (via Lockheed Martin Transit Center), and there have been talks on extending the existing light rail service further south from Winchester Station in Campbell to serve Los Gatos via the Vasona Line. A next logical step could be to upgrade the Stevens Creek Blvd. corridor to become a full-fledged LR line instead of just BRT since it sees so many riders on the Lines 23 and 323 with the VTA... yet, BART is already gaining full speed in construction further south from Fremont, so anything can happen along the way.

Maybe if BART wasn't sucking up all of the available transportation dollars like a vampire bat, we could have a reasonable LRT network.

BART is superior form of transportation (heavy subway/train, fully segregated etc). BART, not that abomination called eBart.

For the same price of the Silicon Valley extension, you could have had a quad track railway electrified to Oakland from San Jose that could have a lot more utility than BART to San Jose and be quite a bit faster. In fact, I don't even get how they can fund this project but not all the Measure B stuff from the early 2000s.

Electrified 3rd rail metro was never meant to go into the suburbs like it has with BART and be used as a commuter rail system.

The main challenges for that: too many level crossings, especially in Oakland, greater risk for vandalizing property (especially with the wires needed to power those trains) and higher risk of accidents since you've got both cargo and passenger services sharing that UP Line.

You obviously misunderstood what I was saying. The BART extension from Fremont to SJ is basically an interurban, and pretty much useless for people who live and work in Silicon Valley. When we passed the sales tax for mass transit, half of it was supposed to go to BART, and the other half was to expand and enhance our local light rail network. Due to some legal trickery, BART got all of the sales tax money, all of the state and federal funding, and is busily draining other accounts, too. Due to the ensuing budget cuts, large parts of Santa Clara County are almost devoid of any type of mass transit. So BART is actually causing more people to drive everywhere, and more air pollution around here.

Hahahaha

And by the way, this did not get so much press, but a double decker bus by Alexander Dennis is being tested in the SF Bay Area, first by AC Transit, now with WestCAT. The former tested it on both local and transbay runs, the latter on its transbay service, the LYNX.

SMART Train Arrival Ceremony

"On April 7th, SMART celebrated the arrival of our first train at the Cotati Depot. The ceremony drew over 300 people and included speeches from politicians, painting an eye on a traditional [Japanese] Daruma Doll, a christening, and a tour of the inside of the train"

SMART General Manager, Farhad Mansourian

Congressman Jared Huffman draws part of the left eye on the Daruma Doll

Chad Edison, Deputy Secretary for Transportation with the California State Transportation Agency, draws part of the left eye on the Daruma Doll

Congressman Jared Huffman christens the SMART Train with a bottle of champagne

SMART Board Member Carol Russell takes a tour of the train

Each two car train set will hold up to 24 bicycles (depending on the mix of wheelchairs, strollers, etc)

Each two-car train set seats 158 people seated, up to 160 standing

Is that stored in Cotati at the moment, and when will it visit Santa Rosa, Petaluma, and Novato so that I can have a sneak peek?

No, I'm not sure where they're storing the train. I think it might be at the maintenance facility but it's not quite done yet. I believe they will have other train viewings as more are delivered.

Wow!

I'm amazed to see such things in the US in this day and age. I'm so proud to have such subways being built here.
