22nd - 30th September construction updates.
Queenstown is definitely going through a boom period at the moment with many projects under construction and many housing estate projects around the area, the main one being Jacks Point. There are currently 6 cranes in the Queenstown - Frankton area, 1 Favco, 4 Liebherrs and 1 self erector. There are also a few mobile cranes and others. Sorry if the photo quality is down on some photos, it's because I was in a bus haha. Not sure what the name of this one is but it is in Frankton and is where the Kawarau River Dam and bridge is. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is "The Rees" on Frankton Road about halfway between Frankton and Queenstown. The site looks like it is very steep and slopes down to the lake. The Oaks motel chain is also next door. ![]() ![]() Don't know the name of this one but it's in the centre of town, on the lake and next to Queenstown Mall. ![]() ![]() ![]() This one is the Mountineer Hotel, it is probably the project that makes the biggest impact in the town. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another Smith project, this one is opposite the mall. There was a mobile crane and concrete pumping going on during the week. It seems like a site where a crane would go up. ![]() ![]() A small project south of the town centre on the lake. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also if you can just make it out, there is a self erector crane in this photo. It is in the industrial estate between the airport and the river. ![]() Opposite the Mountineer Hotel, expressions of interests for a project. ![]() Enjoy! |

If sprawl continues the way it is going now, Frankton and the area around the airport will become the business district with the Queenstown town centre mainly catering for tourists and tourism related business. Frankton Road was actually fairly busy in peak hour and one of the intersections in Queenstown I believe should have lights.

Seems like the Queenstown & Lakes District Council is not really worried about sprawl....

Queenstown isn't really that bad for a resort town when it comes to sprawl. When I consider some of the resort towns I've been to in Europe, they're pretty sprawly too. But yes, they probably could do with a few more midrise apartment blocks for hotels.

Density in the main town area is one thing but sprawl is just going to result in big problems for the area...

Seriously, If Wellington can do it, Queenstown should have no problem

If you take into account Porirua, The Hutt and the Kapiti Coast (around Plimmerton etc), and the city itself, Wellington does actually sprawl quite a bit.

Absolutely, Nick. You're dead right. Wellington, however, sprawls along railway lines thanks to the topography which makes the sprawl slightly more manageable.

Cromwell. Before and after
A couple of pics of Cromwell, Central Otago.
The first is the Cromwell of my childhood up to early 80s with the old 1 lane Cromwell bridge leading to Cromwells ''Gold Rush'' error main street. ![]() The second is the same spot now as it has been for the last 16 years after the filling of Lake Dunstan behind the Clyde Dam 20km down the road. The main street ran up out of the water to the left of the point. image hosted on flickr ![]() What's left image hosted on flickr
