From Helsinki to Vilnius.

On request:

Last 2 summers made a trip through the Baltics.
We've started the journey in august 2009 in the Finish capital Helsinki, took the ferry to Tallin, discovered the eastern part of Estonia and travelled south to Riga, where we took the plane back home..
This year we returned to the Baltics, started in Vilnius, took the train to Klaipéda and returned to Vilnius Airport via Kaunas.

On request of one of your Lithuanian members I post my pictures -a lot of pictures!- in this subforum.

I hope you like it, cause we liked it!

Helsinki:

Quote:
Helsinki is the capital and largest city in Finland. It is in the southern part of Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, by the Baltic Sea. The population of the city of Helsinki is 579,016, making it the most populous municipality in Finland by a wide margin.

Although I remember these pics from your last years thread "From Helsinki to Riga" they're so good in terms of composition, objects, that it's pleasure to look at them again!

Suomenlinna

Quote:
Suomenlinna, until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands, and which is nowadays part of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site and popular with both tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site. Originally named Sveaborg (Fortress of Svea), or Viapori as called by Finns, it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still also sometimes known by its original name. In Swedish-speaking contexts, the name Sveaborg is usually used.

I loved the three capitals. But Vilnius the most, that's correct.
It's not as 'perfect' as lovely Tallin, not as kosmopolitic as big Riga, but very cosy and easy going. And there are lots of cyclists, which I found -as the president of my cities' cyclists union- great!
Anyway, I think the three countries and their capitals are still too underrated in Europe. That's why I shared my pictures to the world.

Very nice, I start to think that Helsinki is also underrated at least here at SSC.

As for cyclists in Vilnius there are still many problems with infrastructure (unfinished roads, not many places where you can leave your bike even in city center) though situation is getting better each year and the number of cyclists is growing.

There's still plenty of work to do in lots of European cities, before it will become cycle-friendly cities.

Before we leave Finland, we take the bus to wooden city of Porvoo, a popular daytrip from Helsinki.

Quote:
Porvoo is a city and a municipality situated on the southern coast of Finland approximately 50 kilometres east of Helsinki. The town received its name from a Swedish earth fortress near the river Porvoonjoki which flows through the town . Porvoo is one of the six medieval towns in Finland, first mentioned as a city in texts from 14th century. Porvoo is the seat of the Swedish speaking Diocese of Porvoo of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

Of course, they're underrated. You can make hundred threads about Paris on SSC Urban showcase section and each of them will definitely get much more views and comments than a single one thread about someone of Baltic capitals. People are narrowminded and stucked into famous, well-known things and it's very hard to get them interested in something new and lesser familiar.

That wouldn't harm, indeed.

We continue our tour and arrived in Tallin:

Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. It occupies a surface of 159.2 km2 in which 404,000 inhabitants live. It is situated on the northern coast of the country, on the banks of the Gulf of Finland, 80 km south of Helsinki.
