West Borough, October 2010:

Londrina, October 12th 2010. National holiday (Our Lady of Aparecida Day, Brazilian patron saint), cold day, but sunny. So, I decided to take a walk on the two most important districts on the West Borough: Quebec and Presidente. In addition, I took pictures of the lakes Igapó III and IV.

Aside the pedestrian corridors, that was my route. Up to my place, 12 km.

Downtown skyline from Quebec:

Presidente. The asphalt is ruined, and the mayor seems doesn't care about it:

Higienópolis Avenue, August 2010:

Higienópolis Avenue cuts, north-south, the west section of Londrina's Central Quadrilateral, splitting west section of Downtown (residential, already shown here), from mid-east section (the "real" Downtown). There are many commercial highrises, several bank agencies, restaurants, bars, travel agencies, etc.

The avenue started in 1940's, about 15 years after the British arrival and Londrina foundation. It was the right place for the coffee mansions, in the city outskirts. That was the time of the "Coffee Golden Age". Londrina (and Northern Paraná) was born because coffee. From 1930's up to 1970's, Londrina was regarded as the "Coffee World Capital". The region accounted for more than one third of the world's production. Than, in 1975, the "Black Frost" destroyed in few hours billions and billions of coffee trees and the economy collapsed. 2 million people left the region. Londrina and northern Paraná reinvented themselves, changing the economy into services, agrobusiness, grains production (Paraná state is the biggest producer in Brazil, almost a quarter of the national output). Today, northern Paraná accounts for only 4% of Brazilian coffee production. Back than, coffee was the most important player in the Brazilian economy, while today is irrelevant.

The photos were not good, high luminosity, and the cell phone doesn't help. It's just to show the area.

Water tank. Northern Paraná cities are very pround of their water tanks. They are regarded as touristic atractions:

Thank you Marcos! I also posted stuff from Maringá in the other thread, the "Little London I".

Linguine, I'd have, but the lack of responses discouraged me a little bit. Anyway, if the page turns, I might post some. Thank you!
