I agree with Alphaville, this is just catch up work from Brisbane--not that Sydney is a cultural mecca either--and all the money in the world is not going to change anything unless attitudes do. Culture has to start from birth. You can't just decide that at 20 that you are going to model yourself into a cultured person. This is the big disadvantage that Australia has vs other nations. Since we aren't raised with culture, there is always going to be something about it that we don't understand. This is what i've noticed with 'cultured' Australians compared to ones i met while living in Europe. The difference is stark in terms of general appreciation and understanding, not to mention quality of output. But even if you do understand it, since the culture at large does not validite your achievements/interests, you are basically operating alone, in a bubble, disconnected from life around you. To be an artist in Australia, even in Melbourne, is difficult. Even artists i know that are relatively successful wouldn't recommend it.

so yeah, there are plenty of reasons why art suffers in Australia compared to other nations, and only attitudes will make a difference, not money.
Do you perchance have an arts degree?

i do actually, but as part of a commerce degree, a double degree, so you can shove your wrongheaded inference up your behind But i have gone on to do further studies in the humanities, most of which has little or nothing to do with the 'problem' of Australian 'culture'.

Truth be told though, an arts degree wouldn't have lead me to that conclusion, unless of course i was studying Australian culture, which i wasn't.

Brisbane and the arts? I love the tackyness of the Gold Coast but Brisbane can almost rival Perth for sterility...well not really.

..so the Arts writer from The Age must be completely deluded huh?

Prob. just should have asked you for a comment instead. Would have saved loads of column inches.

As for sterility - you come from Adelaide. Give us a break.

Adelaide, sterile? What do you define as sterile?

I was there two months ago and its inner city areas drip with character. It has some amazing inner city architecture that rivals Sydney and Melbourne that Perth and Bris could only dream of. For its size does extremely well and has been doing the 'arts thing' since the Don Dunstan years, back when Qld was run by "meat and three veg" hicks like Sir Joh. This can also be attributed to its higher levels of multiculturalism in these years which was on par with Melbourne and Sydney.

Architecture may be nice, but it doesn't make a city interesting.

Adelaide has some good festivals - but all cities do. Other than that, Adelaide is prettty quiet.

Ok so you edited in a response. Good move.

I dispute that Adelaide is quiet. Yes, it doesn't have the energy that perhaps Brisbane's CBD has has (I haven't been to Perth so I can't comment- but from what I hear its not great), but its inner city areas, partly due to the way they are built, are pretty vibrant.

Good festivals that all cities have? Adelaide is home to one of the most highly acclaimed fringe festivals in the world. It doesn't even compete with Sydney and Melbourne in that regard - it takes on Edinburgh.

Architecture doesn't make a city great? Dude.. what planet are you living on.... alongside culture its probably one of the most defining characters of all of the greatest cities on earth.

At least its design is somewhat interesting.

Surely better than the beige and white balcony ridden trash around it. Sound like somewhere familiar?

a journalist's job is to create interest. of course he is going to hype up these 'developments'. He/she isn't going to say 'oh yeah, Brisbane has culture now, good stuff eh?'.

And besides, i wouldn't trust any major Australian newspaper to inform me about culture, even The Age.

oh ffs enough of this city vs city thing...
look, every cities in Australia has it's own cultural thing that cannot be matched by other cities in Australia
I havent really travel to any major cities so i can only afford my view of Brisbane.
From the cities I have been (Europe and Asia mainly), Brisbane is a small city. Obviously one of the newer kids on the block compare to some cities that are dated to 1000 if not 2000 years old. These cities do not need to have beautiful art galleries or huge museums to attact visitors, the city itself is the attraction.
Brisbane, however I do admit lack the attraction from the city itself. No matter how hard it tries, it will never catch up to some of the world class cities around the world.
However, Brisbane is much more relaxing and enjoyable than many of these cities. Brisbane offers a nice stroll down the riverside where Paris cant. In Paris, the walkway next to the river is small and you will want to avoid it as much as you can. The river isn't attractive in the Paris river, nor any other major rivers in Europe like the Danube in Vienna. The only one i can think of is Prague.
Brisbane also offers beautiful weather where alot of cities around the world can't. The art culture of Brisbane is growing but it takes time. I applaud Sydney and Melbourne for keeping the culture of Australia alive. Let Brisbane have it's few moments of glory, no matter how hard we try and in certain cases as well, Adeladie and Perth try, we will never catch up to the other 2 major cities.
