View from the Window at Le Gras

View from the Window at Le Gras (La cour du domaine du Gras) was the first successful permanent photograph, created by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 at Saint-Loup-de-Varennes.

Niépce captured the photo with a camera obscura focused onto a sheet of 20 × 25 cm oil-treated bitumen. As a result of the 8-hour exposure, sunlight illuminates the buildings on both sides.

After an unsuccessful trip to Britain to attempt to interest the Royal Society in the process, Niépce gave the photo to the botanist Francis Bauer. It was last publicly exhibited in 1898, and was thereafter forgotten. Helmut Gernsheim brought the photo to prominence again in 1952 and the Eastman Kodak Company made a copy.

In 1973, the University of Texas acquired the plate from Helmut Gernsheim.
Today, the plate is on display at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center.

"Boulevard du Temple", taken by Louis Daguerre in late 1838 or early 1839, was the first-ever photograph of a person. It is an image of a busy street, but because exposure time was over ten minutes, the city traffic was moving too much to appear. The exception is a man in the bottom left corner, who stood still getting his boots polished long enough to show up in the picture.

Oldest known color photos

Wow, and you thought your parent’s photo album was old… Oddee has an interesting collection of some of the world’s oldest photographs, ranging from the 1800s, to WWI&II. Although I found a slight error in what they claim is the oldest known color photography.

This photo was taken in 1872 (sic 1877), and Oddee called it the earliest color photo in the world.

Before the Autochrome process was perfected in France, this photograph of a landscape in Southern France was taken. No, it is not hand-tinted. This is a color-photograph. (Note: It was published in a Time/Life Book entitled “Color” in 1972, “courtesey of George Eastman House, Paulus Lesser.”) You are looking at the birth of color photography seven years after the American Civil War. 130 years ago this view of Angouleme, France, was created by a “subtractive” method. This is the basis for all color photography, even today. It was taken by Louis Ducos du Hauron who proposed the method in 1869. It was not until the 1930’s that this method was perfected for commercial use.

However, I found a color photo taken over 10 years earlier by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861.

But other than that little snafu, there’s some nice shots from 1909 Russia and WWI.

Oddee has many more interesting vintage color photos to look at.

The credit for producing the earliest photographs is given to the Frenchman Joseph Neipce. In 1826 he used sunlight to capture a scene onto a pewter plate coated with bitumen; the image was "developed" using oil of lavender. It was mounted inside a camera obscura, a device for projecting images invented hundreds of years earlier. This is the first surviving picture, made in 1825, using this heliographic process; its subject, a 17th century engraving, was exposed to sunlight for 8 hours:

Desculpa zonear o thread com imagens que não são do tema, mas achei muito interessante. Encontrei somente duvidas se essa poderia ser a fotografia mais antiga, mas de qualquer forma, fica o registro.

The Canadian Press is reporting that the discovery of a new “oldest photograph” in the world could lead to a large payout from the lucky dealer that purchased it.

The birth of photography might be scaled waaay back to 1790.
