Wouldn't that be fantastic. Sadly our politicians are too inept to develop public transport properly. Hopefully the Phoenix park tunnel will prove to be useful but a lot more needs to be done. Metro north is needed, considering the growth in passenger numbers at Dublin airport and the airport business park that will be constructed. If they don't build metro north then at the very least a DART spur is needed from Clongriffin to the airport. Ideally they should start building some kind of rapid transit to the airport soon, to coincide with the opening of the second runway. One can dream I guess......

Those construction photos look a lot like the ones taken of the Loop trolley line here in St. Louis. I hope the disruption there is not too bad.

Ripping the old tram lines up was a stupid decision. They used to extend all the way to Dalkey. Now we're spending all of this time and money to rebuild a network that still isn't as good as what we had before

Looking at the post that launched this thread way back in 2005; I've marked those delivered () and those which never saw the light of day ()

The Government is finalising details of a €20 billion, 10-year transport plan that will include

*an underground rail link between Heuston Station and the Dublin Docklands.

* a new "western corridor" linking Cork by dual carriageway to Sligo via Limerick and Galway.

* a metro route that would extend from Dublin city centre to the airport and on to Swords.

* double-decker trains would be able to use the line, travelling directly from Drogheda through to Kildare. It would also free up capacity on northern routes allowing for increased commuter services, with the extension of the Dart line to Maynooth.

*The completion of all motorways and dual carriageways between Dublin and the main Irish cities, which has already been committed to, will also be included in the plan.

*a new commuter line for Dunboyne, Co Meath

*upgrade programmes for local and inter-regional roads around the country

* and park and ride facilities on the outskirts of major cities.
Not much record of success, notably in public transport.

I really don't understand why in a city with a very poor public transport like Dublin (although the population of one million inhabitants), there are so few investments. Now the economic crisis is over...

I was there in April and it was absolute chaos especially on the day of the IFTAs. I never would've thought a city like Dublin had such a poor public transportation system. I hope it's reanalyzed because the city could really benefit a lot from decent transports.

Luas Cross City is a big enough project and is running through very old streets. There is a also ongoing work to reopen a railway line through the city and there are other heavy rail works underway.

It's a joke, they shut down the Luas connection to Connolly station and Docklands, only to build 2 rail crossings. Something they'd do in 3 weekends in Krakow, leaving the tram operating during the week!

Fair enough. I think it is a bit more though than that, there are two separate Square crossings to go in and two connecting crossovers also to be put in. There are also electrical works to be done and all whilst keeping open O'Connell St.

Infrastructure providers in Ireland usually over schedule such works to make it look good when it finishes early!

I was in Dublin 5 years ago and i think this city really needs connection between the two Luas lines, and it's a very small system for a city like Dublin. In my opinion, the capital of Ireland should have at least 4 or 5 light rail lines. I don't understand why the old tram system was closed.....it was a big mistake.

IMHO Dublin needs also at least 2 underground metro lines and 2 new suburban DART lines through the city.
