RESIDENTS in Cagayan de Oro City can now undergo training to qualify for high-paid jobs like casino game card dealing in Metro Manila and abroad.

The Vineyard International Polytechnic College (VIPC), an international card dealing school located at Luna-Corrales Streets in the city, opened a branch in Cagayan de Oro City and tied up with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) Training Center (PTC) to offer basic course in card dealing and slot machine technician that would give Mindanao residents the same opportunities offered in its Metro Manila training center at much lower cost.

During the recent launching in Cagayan de Oro, Amelita P. Padilla, VIPC president, said the demand for professional card dealers in Metro Manila and abroad is rising with the establishment of Pagcor's entertainment city, which is a $20-billion Las Vegas-like gaming and entertainment complex, in Manila.

Pagcor has noted to generate at least 20,000 jobs for the establishment of the complex.

Padilla said professional card dealers abroad earn a minimum of $1000 every month or up to Aus$ 1,200 in Australia depending on their skills.

Padillla emphasized that the school's intention is not to encourage people into engaging in card gaming "but to provide better opportunities to those who want to land better jobs in the Philippines and abroad."

Padilla explained that PTC is the forefront training provider of Pagcor, which VIPC is linked as an outside training service organization to help build a professional service industry by offering affordable card dealing and slot machine technician courses in Mindanao.

She, however, clarified that the opening of said school does not completely compete with the courses offered by the government in accredited schools through the Technical Skills and Development Authority (Tesda).

According to Ricardo Banag, head trainer, PTC, trainees aging 21-35 years old can qualify as a card dealer "but a person's ability, personality and attitude counts more than anything else."

Banag said even persons without experience in playing casino-style card games can still own a career in card dealing.

He emphasized that PTC always assumes that students "have little or no knowledge about casino card games that even experienced players know very little about what it takes to be an effective dealer."

VIPC offers certificates in Basic Card Dealing, Baccarat course with 160 hours; Blackjack Dealing course (120 hrs); craps dealer course (160 hrs); Paigow poker dealer course (120 hrs); Pontoon dealer course (120 hrs); and Texas Hold'em poker dealer course (160 hrs).

Padilla said after completing a certificate program in casino dealing, the successful graduate would have a complete knowledge on blackjack and baccarat and be completely prepared to start working as a casino dealer.

For those who prefer to undergo training as slot machine technicians, students will learn daily floor procedures, identifying errors and slot machine malfunctions and troubleshooting, which is also has big demand in other countries.

The modular components of the proposed JR Borja Bridge funded by the Spanish Government have reportedly arrived already.

However, the delay of the project has been attributed to right-of-way issues. As shown in the pictures, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has already identified the properties which will be affected by the project. They have marked (X) the structures which will be demolished soon. Above is this residential/commercial building which is right at the end of JR Borja Street along Burgos Street. The two concrete posts of the gate have been marked X as well as the signpost adjacent to it.

This property on the left will also have to go as marked with X.

These two houses are the only large structures on the eastern side of the river as beyond these two are nothing but a vacant portion of Isla de Oro with some light materials. It’s a different story though at Carmen side as the right-of-way passes through a denser section of the population.

Hopefully, these right-of-way negotiations including compensation payments will be dealt with due urgency.

As observed, initial white painting on the building’s exterior has been applied while the ground floor is currently being redeveloped. Work started a couple of weeks back or just enough time after Max’s vacated it and transfered to Limketkai Complex.

There is now vertical construction at the site fronting the Bulua Public Market and Westbound Terminal Complex which I posted last August 30, 2011 (LINK: http://www.cagayandeorodev.com/?p=14122 ).

As shown, drainage culverts and concrete footings are being installed with plenty of civil works ongoing. Information gathered onsite revealed this commercial complex project is that of Montecarlo Realty. Accordingly, this will house the Montecarlo Fish Landing area which was affected by the 3rd Bridge Access Road and additional stalls for the Vegetable Landing Area which ran out of space for stall locators. These establishments formerly occupied the area along Agora Road but where relocated at the said complex.

This new development has slowly converted the area as a new growth center as planned by the city.

Concreting of unpaved roads at the city proper has been ongoing since last month. These asphalt roads need more maintenance especially that the country is humid such that paving will reduce maintenance costs.

Most of these projects were held in abeyance due to the fiesta activities and work began in September. Shown above is the groundwork prior to concreting of Cruz Taal St from Rizal St up to Capistrano St. Drainage culverts are currently being installed.

A portion of Rizal Street from Yacapin up to Pacana is also closed due to paving project.

Concreting of a section of Tiano Bros. St. from Yacapin to Cayetano Pacana was completed earlier. The road is still closed due to curing.

Also implemented at the same time is concreting of Mabini St from Velez up to Capistrano. This road is also closed to traffic pending curing period.

Lastly, portion of Capistrano St fronting Cosmopolitan Homes up to Macahambus St is now paved. The contractor still has to clean up the remaining stockpiles of earth seen onsite.

Accordingly, these projects were implemented through the city’s barangay empowerment program. That is bidding of infrastructure projects and subsequent awarding of contractors are done by the concerned barangay itself with the funds still coming from the city government. This is stated in the billboards installed onsite.

After the above projects. a few more asphalt road sections in the city proper remain and needs to be paved soonest and I believe these have been identified and calendared by the respective barangay: JR Borja St (Velez to Capistrano); Capistrano St (fronting Savemore to JR Borja); Capistrano St (Chaves to Hayes fronting City Hall).

The long-delayed construction of access roads leading to Cagayan de Oro third Bridge is now nearing completion. In her report to Secretary Rogelio L. Singson, DPWH-Region 10 Director Norma U. Gironella said the ongoing construction of Cagayan de Oro 3rd Bridge's access roads and coastal roads posted an actual accomplishment of 94.85% with a positive slippage of 0.060 %.

Director Ginorella said they are now focusing on the completion of Phase IX of Cagayan de Oro Bridge and Access Road Project.

The project comprises road concreting of Bayabas Section-West Bound Terminal-Iponan Bridge III Junction, Igpit, Opol National Road; road concreting along barangays Kauswagan and Bayabas, and graveling of coastal roads along barangays Lapasan and Gusa.

The ongoing road concreting works has a total length of 14.423 km and a total cost of P642,824,622.51.

"Upon its completion, the agricultural communities in the congressional districts of Cagayan De Oro and Misamis Oriental can immediately deliver their products to the market areas" Gironella said.

She added that the project also serves as access road going to the Cagayan De Oro Port, and it connects the city Port Road in Puntod to the existing national road network in Opol, Misamis Oriental and is expected to attract more investors and generate job opportunities in the area.

The entire Cagayan de Oro Bridge and Access Road Project has 12 phases. Majority of the phases (phase I-VIII) are already complete. Phase X will start this year after the release of funds needed for the construction of additional 620 linear meter coastal road along Barangay Gusa and construction of Kulambog Bridge along Kulambog, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

Phase XI of the project is programmed for implementation in CY 2012. It will be centered on the completion of the Cagayan de Oro Coastal By-pass Road, Junction J.R. Borja Extension and Gusa National Highway, the Rotonda at Barangay Puntod, and the construction of Bitan-ag Creek at Barangay Lapasan.

When completed, this huge project will be an enormous help to the travelling public along Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Road (BCIR) as heavy traffic congestion will be avoided. It is vital to the economic activities in Cagayan de Oro City and its neighboring cities and towns.

MAYOR Vicente Emano announced on Thursday intentions of Chinese businessmen to establish a "China Town" in Cagayan de Oro City.

Emano, over his regular radio program, said some Chinese traders are keen to own a large property in Cogon area where they can establish spacious town to set up a landmark in the city.

"I offered them (Chinese businessmen) to lease out the former city cemetery beside the Hall of Justice as the (Catholic) bishop there welcomes the proposal for the establishment of China town, but they refused. They're more interested to lease an area where the city fire station is located (in Cogon area)," the mayor said.

In Cagayan de Oro, Cogon is considered as the center of trading place in the city. Next to it is Barangay Carmen.

Emano is optimistic that the investors' intentions will be realized the soonest possible time to boost employment in the locality.

The mayor also announced that more investors are coming in to put up several establishments in the city this year despite the recent kidnapping incident involving a local trader based here. He did not, however, reveal the identities of the investors yet.

Manny Boniao, owner of an agricultural supply store in Barangay Gusa, this city, was abducted inside his store early morning on September 19 by his still unknown kidnappers.

After a five-day captivity, the businessman was released. Police are still investigating the identities of the suspects believed to be "professional crime syndicate." (Loui S. Maliza)

The Philippine Iron Construction and Marine Works (PICMW) located in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental has completed the construction of the first Philippine-made Navy vessel, a 579-ton Landing Craft Utility (LCU).

The ship’s hull and fixtures were made fully by PICMW while the engine and propulsion system was created by Propmech Corporation, a known Philippine marine dealer for Caterpillar propulsion sytems on seacrafts.

The construction of the ship was funded by the Navy’s P176-million LCU acquisition project. The Philippine-made LCU will provide for a readily available watercraft for combat support missions such as logistic transport and amphibious operations.

PICMW configured the LCU to transport combat personnel, tanks, vehicles, artillery, and cargo. It is said to be stationed in Mindanao.

The ship’s characteristics are as follows:

* Complement: 15 Personnel/Crew
* Length: 51.43 M
* Breadth: 10.00 M
* Depth: 2.44 M
* Draft: 1.52 M
* Displacement: (Approx) 579 Tons
* Speed: 14 knots
* Hull Construction: Flat Bottom, Welded Steel

Capacities:

* Passenger Capacity -200 sitting passengers
* Cargo Space Area -About 250 m2
* Weight of Cargo -Maximum of 110 tons

Shipbuilding and repair has been going on at PICMW even before Hanjin came to Misamis Oriental.

THE City Council here has approved Tuesday a move to accept the “unsolicited proposal” of Basura Atbp., Inc. to design, finance, develop, operate and maintain the solid waste management project of the city.

The proposal also includes the construction, operation and management of an engineered sanitary landfill and collection and disposal of garbage, under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme.

Councilor President Elipe, chairman of the Committee on Environment, said the proposal would still undergo further study and it is subject for challenge with other possible proposals from other solid waste management companies.

The proposal, the city council said, addresses the whole proves of landfill management from the collection and disposal from subdivisions/commercial establishment; segregation of recyclables at a materials recovery facility (MRF); composting the compostable waste; disposal of residuals at the sanitary landfill; and collection of leachate from waste before it is released back into the environment.

Under such proposal, Basura Atbp charges the City Government P1,800 per ton of garbage for its services. It, accordingly, can provide a facility that can handle a volume of at least 250 tons per day.

The proposal was personally endorsed by Mayor Vicente Emano to the City Council.

Earlier, three other technologies coming from Germany, Korea and Philippines were presented to contract on garbage disposal before the city council.

Elipe said the mayor is to decide who to contract with for the solid waste management project in the city.

He said the contracted company will operate on the new sanitary landfill located at Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City.

Basura Atbp has been collecting garbage in the city for months, Elipe said.

The City Government pays the company more than P200 per ton of garbage, Elipe said, adding that “it is very helpful in the expenses of the city government since it will no longer pay the salary for the garbage collectors and for the maintenance of the pay loaders and other facilities for garbage collection.”

He said the P1,800-proposal for garbage collection is a package that includes the sanitary landfill.

Elipe said since the Basura Atbp was the first to submit a proposal, it is up to the other solid waste management companies to present their intent.

No. 39 of the series…here are latest updates of some previously posted construction projects in Cagayan de Oro City beginning with the 4-storey dorm/pension house along Tomas Saco-1st Street in Nazareth.

As shown, construction is now on the 3rd and 4th floors. My previous update was last August 18, 2011. Next is this very thin 5-storey commercial building along Don Apolinar Velez Street. Previously posted April 18, 2011.

Just beside it is the vertical expansion of the former Chevrolet showroom building. I’m thinking either one or two more floors.

The 6-storey Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School building is also now rising up to the 4th and 5th levels. Previous update was last June 20, 2011. Construction somewhat slowed down in a couple months where work focused on the two lower levels for retail. But now, vertical work is back.

Update of this commercial building expansion along JR Borja Extension showed significant progress. Previously posted last June 15, 2011,

Below is the 3-storey building along 6th Street in Nazareth near Loreto’s. My previous update was last August 18, 2011. Painting is now underway.

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Church in Carmen is also nearing completion. As shown, the belfry is now being finished. Landscaping of the vicinity is also ongoing. My last post on this was on March 1, 2011. Back then, the belfry is yet to rise.

Previously posted last April 18, 2011, below is this commercial building along Corrales Avenue, just a stone’s throw from Bombo Radyo and fronting Lutheran Church. The building has talen shape and perhaps it may soon be completed.

Below is the status of the 5-storey commercial building in Lapasan. My previous update was June 20, 2011. You can clearly notice the rooftop section has an open space for possible al fresco area.

Lastly, work continues for this pension house (Cyechincon) along Mabini Street. Previous update was August 18, 2011. I think it intends to go one more floor up.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Oct. 6 (PIA) –- Mayor Vicente Y. Emano has expressed his gratitude to the management of Gaisano Inc. for opening its 6th branch in the city which he said shows confidence in the city’s economy.

“Another mall was recently opened in Barangay Bulua and this has positive indications to the economic growth of the city,” the Mayor said.

“Ang pagbukas sa Gaisano Mini-Mall sa Bulua usa ka positibong indikasyon nga taas kaayo ang pagsalig sa mga lokal ug langyaw’ng magpapatigayon sa natad sa negosyo sa atong dakbayan (The opening of a Gaisano Mini-Mall in Barangay Bulua is a positive indication of the high trust and confidence of the local businessmen in the city),” Emano said.

“Gawas pa, makatabang sa panarbaho sa mga kabus, diin ako mapasalamaton (Aside from that, it has helped the poor find employment, to which I am very thankful)” the Mayor added.

Gaisano is one of the first mall and department store in Cagayan de Oro City. (CIO/PIA-10)

“The said plantation involves an area of about 2,000 hectares owned by A. Brown Co. and can offer jobs to not less than 200 of our poor farmers,” Emano said.

It was learned that Asia Steel will also soon be opening its plant in Cagayan. The mayor said all these will boost the city’s economy activities and “improve the lives of the city’s constituents.”

“I hope these businesses can give jobs to the poor constituents of the city.” (PR)

infrastructure program

Transport Secretary Mar Roxas yesterday unveiled a P500 billion infrastructure program to be implemented during the term of President Aquino which he said will spur economic activity in the countryside.

Roxas, speaking before the Makati Business Club, said included in the program is the pursuit of the Chinese-backed NorthRail project.

"We are reconfiguring this project after our productive discussion with top Chinese officials during our recent trip there with the President. We want to rewrite the lopsided contract to our mutual advantage. Instead of just a train that will run from Kalookan to Mabalacat in Pampanga, we want this to stretch out from Metro Manila to Clark. We are resolved to get the biggest bang out of every peso spent – no overprice, no fancy specs that we don’t need," he said.

He said the Department of Transportation and Communications will similarly pursue the speedy and just resolution of past infrastructure projects that "simply did not fit standards of a sound deal, either by dint of corruption or technical fault".

Roxas said he has installed a solid and competent team at DOTC to resolve problem contracts entered into by the previous government.

With this team, he expects the legal remediation of the NAIA Terminal 3 issue to proceed based on fair international standards of commercial settlement.

He said officials will also be meeting with building contractor Takenaka Corp. of Japan for the completion of the NAIA Terminal 3.

Among the major projects Roxas presented in the briefing were the 11.7 km LRT 1 Baclaran to Cavite and the LRT 2 Santolan, Pasig to Masinag, Antipolo extension rail projects; international airports in Puerto Princesa, Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental and Panglao in Bohol; ports in Davao, and the roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) projects linking China with either the Subic or Batangas ports.

Of the P500 billion total project cost, the LRT 1 Cavite Extension will account for P79 billion, of which P48.24 billion will be for the superstructure and P30.7 billion for rolling stocks.

The NAIA upgrade which involves full operation of Terminal 3 and operational improvement of Terminals 1 and 2 will cost about P2 billion.

He said the central Ro-Ro spine calls for an integrated transportation system combining the Ro-Ro ferry port network with new toll roads linking Manila, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol and Northern Mindanao.

"It will reduce overall travel time of passengers from Manila to Mindanao from three days to 15 hours. It will take off in Batangas port and will create more traffic volume in that port, which is currently underutilized" he said.

He encourages MBC members to participate in government projects through public-private partnership (PPP).

"If they know already that there will be an airport in a place, of course, they will invest in business in the area and that will bring multiplier effect and growth," he said.

Some of the projects could be financed through official development assistance (ODAs).

All these projects, according to Roxas, will adhere to President Aquino’s 5Rs – Right project, Right quality, Right people, Right cost, and Right on time.

He also assured a regime of maritime transport safety during his watch, through investments in satellite-based signaling systems and other technologies to make sea travel safer.

Oct 7 2011 --- Nestlé’s efforts to construct more environmentally friendly buildings for its operations receive international recognition.

An innovation centre built by Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW SA) in Switzerland has been recognised as a leading example of sustainable design.

The firm, a joint venture between Nestlé and General Mills, has been awarded a platinum certification by the United States Green Building Council for the building in the Swiss city of Orbe.

It is the first time a Swiss building has won the highest level of certification the council awards to recognise leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED).

The centre uses water from melted alpine snow for its cooling systems, an innovation that helps reduce energy usage by a third.

More than 50,000 gallons of rainwater are collected and stored in tanks for irrigation and for use in sanitary facilities at the site.

Burned ground coffee waste produces steam to provide a back-up source of heating.

And more than half the building was constructed using locally-sourced recycled materials.

‘Pioneering achievement’

Nestlé and General Mills set up the joint venture CPW to produce and sell ready-to-eat breakfast cereals worldwide beyond the US and Canada.

The innovation centre is part of CPW’s global Research and Development network.

It focuses on ideas to improve nutritional content, freshness, taste and texture for the firm's well-known breakfast cereal brands like Fitness, Cheerios and Nesquik.

“This pioneering achievement represents a best-in-class intersection of sustainability and innovation,” said Mayank Patel, Vice President for Research & Development, and Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs, at Cereal Partners Worldwide.

“CPW is proud to be driving innovation in the global breakfast cereals category from Switzerland’s first LEED Platinum facility. This reflects General Mills and Nestlé’s shared commitment to environmental sustainability,” he added.

‘Prime example’

“Nestlé’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” continued Rick Fedrizzi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the US Green Building Council.

“The urgency of the Green Building Council’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Nestlé serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

‘Feel good’

Switzerland isn’t the only place in the world where Nestlé is developing greener buildings.

In the United States, Nestlé Waters North America (NWNA) last month received the LEED Gold certification for its headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut.

It was the company’s tenth LEED-certified building in the country.

Energy-saving measures introduced include a low-energy lighting system, an employee shuttle to encourage the use of public transport, and using furniture, carpet and ceiling tiles made out of recycled materials.

“We feel good coming to work every day, being part of and showing visitors the innovative, green features of our office building,” said Kim Jeffery, President and Chief Executive Officer of NWNA.

‘Responsible corporate citizen’

Elsewhere in the US, Nestlé Purina PetCare is converting the sun’s rays into renewable energy at its Flagstaff pet food factory in Arizona.

The factory, which produces brands such as Purina One BeyOnd, has 1,900 solar panels on its rooftop.

“Our solar array – the largest in the region for a private enterprise, shows this community, our consumers and our associates that Nestlé Purina is a leader in this area and a responsible corporate citizen,” said Bill Calloway, Flagstaff Factory Manager, for Nestlé Purina PetCare US.

“The renewable energy captured by the solar panels in one year is estimated to offset the annual greenhouse gas emission from 88 passenger vehicles,” added Tom Burke, Engineer and Project Manager, at the Flagstaff factory.

Sawdust and coconut shells

Currently, 21 Nescafé factories worldwide are using spent coffee grounds as renewable energy source.

The latest is the Cagayan de Oro Nescafé factory in the Philippines.

It uses a special boiler to recycle and burn spent coffee grounds, sawdust and coconut shells to produce renewable energy.

As a result, over two-thirds of its oil consumption has been reduced.

Fossil energy

In Africa, the Cerelac infant cereal production factory in Tema, Ghana, is equipped with the latest food processing technology.

This has helped reduce fossil energy consumption by around 15%.

Also, the new chillers at the factory use natural refrigerants to lower both emissions and production costs.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Germany’s Performance and Luxury car brand BMW has set up its first ever Mindanao dealership in this city.

BMW Premium Motoren Corporation has just opened a P26-million 1,300 sq.m. showroom and service center at a 3,600 square meter lot in the business park of the plush Pueblo de Oro Township in Uptown Cagayan de Oro.

“We will offer the whole line of BMW car models now available in the Philippines as well as BMW motorcycle and bicycles, plus accessories like High Performance Engine Kits and mag wheels for racing, as well as lifestyle items,” said Alan H. Muñoz, Director for Dealer Development. “Our prices from cars to accessories and services are the same nationwide.”

At present, BMW has five dealerships across the country: Prestige Cars (Makati), Autohaus BMW (Libis, Quezon City), Autozentrum BMW (Alabang), Pampanga Premier Cars and Performance Auto BMW (Cebu). Besides Cagayan de Oro, another BMW dealership in Bacolod will also be opening this month. Asian Carmakers Corp. (ACC) headed by Kagay-anon tycoon Jose Ch. Alvarez, is the official distributor and importer of BMW cars in the Philippines.

“Mindanao is a very good market for our motorcycles,” Mr. Muñoz said. “This is our biggest market next to Manila. And that will continue to grow, because admittedly, not only will we be selling to Cagayan de Oro, but the other major cities in Mindanao. We see Mindanao as one big market and the cities are all interconnected with good roads conducive to motorcycling. Having it in Cagayan de Oro will be good.”

BMW car and motorcycle enthusiasts have welcomed the establishment of the showroom and service center in the city since they previously had to send their BMW units to Cebu for servicing.

“This is welcome news for us BMW enthusiasts who previously had to spend a fortune even just to have our units checked up since we had to send them to Cebu,” said Roberto W. Ansaldo, a businessmen and member of Kagay-anon Krusers, a local group of big bike enthusiasts.

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW or Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company famous for its performance and luxury vehicles, and is a global leader in premium car sales. It also owns and produces the Mini brand, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Mootrrad and Husqvarna brands.
