A lot of people seem to be criticising the delays with Sky City, and the lack of building approvals at this stage is of some concern. But the thing to remember is that this thing could be on hold till 2019 and still be completed before Kingdom Tower is completed in 2020

Thats why this building is so interesting to watch. If it happens, it will change the way buildings get built and the shape of growing cities to come.

In 2010, Sky city will be finished in 2011. It'll be constructed in less than a year

Actually many people want to see this building which can be finished in 1 year by Chinese. However it has spent 3 years...

Escape in the event of a fire will be a big issue with this building, so I propose outfitting each floor with hang gliders. Escape a fiery death in style!

My optimism is fading fast. They need to get their sh** together and admit that once the tower is constructed that the time from breaking ground to completion is better than most, but is still nothing close to what they promised. Even if the superstructure can be completed in under a year, the time needed to get approval and finish prepping takes 4 years.

You just forgot to mention that 4 years includes designing, testing, building prefabrication factories and going trough the bureaucratic mess for the first time. From which most of it won't be necessary when they decide to build more of these towers, BUT even if each tower would take 4 years with approval process and preparation that's still far from at least twice as much as you need to design and build a classic tower.

Apparently Skyscrapercity disagree with you, that's why this thread is in the proposed section not in the under construction section. Site prep is generally counted towards the actual construction of the tower. Foundation work, OTOH, should indicate the start of the construction process. For this tower, BSB has clearly indicated separate time frame for foundation work and "assembly." The latter being the three months quoted.

Actual construction time is still less than a year, we don't say OWTC or SWFC took over a decade to build just because they took that long to get finance.

Maybe the municipal government is getting cold feet? I mean, if this thing catches on fire or gets knocked down by a freak disaster the media everywhere will go nuts screaming about how there was a lack of accountability on the part of the government in letting Broad build this thing and however else they want to spin the story.

I think that's exactly the reason behind the permit delays.

It's not dead. If an architect can have the guts to try to build this not-so-safe building in less than a year, I think he can have the guts to keep this idea alive. But you could be right in a way, because many people think the speedy construction (or even the building itself) will never happen.

But there is hope. Like I said, this architect has guts. A vision. I assume he's very persistent. Let's just hope he's not arrogant or greedy. I admit the building's not very safe, but they could come up with some kind of solution.

we know the project is not dead, the question was whether or not the progress is dead. the project is awaiting approval and therefore preparations went on hold is last we heard and he asked if there are news for the better.
