CTBUH:

The ambitious China Broad Group today announced plans to build a sister tower to its highly-anticipated Sky City project in Changsha. Sky City II has been proposed as a 236-story, 1,008-meter (3,307-foot) supertall, built using same prefabricated process as its 838-meter (2,749-foot) predecessor.

That prefabrication process is the recipient of a 2013 Innovation Award from CTBUH.

Sky City II would be built on a island outside the city of Qingdao, but only after the completion of Sky City I, which Broad Group reports is in the final approval phases.

I would argue that we should put the Sky City 2 in the section of Proposed Supertalls .

we already had a thread for that, but it is entitled vision for aslong there are no specific plans for the building. ctbuh also has it as vision for now. if Sky City gets build we should get back to the tower.

What about the Dubai-style manmade island? Is that also a vision or it's already there.

Why not build it inside the city?

Hey folks, I havenpt been here for a month and I see already plans for a second Sky City, but what about the first Sky City? Are the preparations still on hold? Has there been any progress?

I've only been checking intermittently. Has any actual prep work been done? I assumed from the beginning that this was a vapor-building. It would be nice to be proven wrong.

Sad, though even more sadly, expected. I always thought this was too good to be true and sadly so far it looks like I was right

Yes. They've done some excavation before putting it on hold.

Obviously just an expensive publicity stunt right?

Just to play the devil's advocate here, but how expensive would such a "publicity stunt" be? If you already own the land, it wouldn't be terribly expensive to pay a local firm for roughing up the land slightly, to keep convincing investors that this still is a real project. Not that I believe that they've done this, but just to ask: How expensive could what we see on that picture be?

While I don't know how expensive exactly would that be I'm sure it would cost something. But what matters most is what would be the point of such a stunt and never finished tower really? They speared some resources designing and testing the building. They even developed more robust system than they used for 200m tower. What's the point of all this then? I think the world is already well aware of the broad technique since they showcased it with those towers build in the matter of weeks. I mean not everyday someone say they can build a skyscraper so fast. They have the attention they looked for then why would they brought the embarrassment on themselves by not delivering this thing? That doesn't sound like a great advertising strategy and doesn't make a lot of sense either.

What I believe is that this project can indeed fail but not because it's a stunt but because it might have problems receiving all needed approvals. That's the biggest concern I have right now. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

This project reminds me of a popular "technological achievement" around 10 years ago in computer industry, a company called atomchip claimed that they had made a supercomputer with 6.8GHz CPU and ultra huge storage capability which was at least 10 years ahead of its time, and selected customers could buy samples for 10-15k usd. http://quantum-optical.com/quantum-products.html
On the other hand, I read a couple of times and saw on news that some real estate developers started some apartment projects, after they sold most of the flats unbuilt yet, they vanished with the money, and nothging else was done.
I hope I'm wrong, I would love to see this building rising soon.

One thing for sure that the Broad Group is not any real estate developers. They are seriously here to shake up the construction world, for better or for worse. They have proven their methods and technology, beyond any doubts, is viable up to 30 storeys. The world jaws dropped when they actually did that in record times. We can't ignore that fete even though it is China which had been getting a lot of bad press everywhere and in in everything.

Like I said, for better or for worse ... they are gunning to settle the debate once and for all ... that the methods and technology can be done for a super tall building.

What is holding them back is only government support and approval.
