The final design will look nothing like the concept. Don't assume the whole thing would be in one building, an average floor plate of 6,200 sqm is just ridiculous. It would likely be one massive tower and several connected blocks around it, which could end up being pretty good. This project will probably be built on the World Expo Site, the event ends in a few days and the site has been earmarked for another cbd.

Oh, come on. Both Tianjin and Wuhan have a lot of supertalls in the pipeline already including several 500m+. Leave this one for Shanghai

Actually I remember a long term proposal next to the Expo area and it looked around 500m at least.

Gotta be pretty monstrous for 100k people. In comparison, the kilometer-high Sky City 1000 was designed for only 50k people.

-edit- Come to think of it, someone should submit Sky City 1000 for their design competition. It's about damn time that Extreme Engineering episode is turned into reality.

If this monstrosity ever gets built , it'll be a dark day for Shanghai . Truly a horrible design . Yeah , I read that it won't look anything like that . I pray that that's the case .
It's like a bad rip-off of the Willis Tower (it can't be a coincidence that they chose the Chicago skyline as the backdrop for their vision rendering) but without any of the charm .
This tower would look great in terms of height . Shanghai would look absolutely amazing with two super-supertalls . Not this beast though .

sounds funny. more like an April 1st joke! An ugly communesque tower that tall, and they expect it not to have a significant visual impact? Are they for real? Hope they are kidding, for it will ruin Shanghai's futuristic skyline.

Interesting, they don't tell you where it will be built, and they are looking for designs. maybe what they want is something conceptual like Bionic Tower.

anyway I didn't think it was a serious thing when I first saw the report. and I won't believe them until they come up with some serious proposal.

It is interesting people are very optimistic about the 555 metre skyscapter Phnom Penh dream about, yet so negatives about these 666 metre tower Shanghai wants to build.

Shanghai (or some other part of China) is a lot more likely to be able to achieve it's dream then Phnom Penh.

Just for comparison, the floor space of NYC's ex-WTC is 3700sqm each.

So if you are going to build something 60% taller, increase its footprint accordingly isn't ridiculous.

The article doesn't actually say is going to be in Shanghai.

What people? People where? On this forum, the responses in the thread for that project in Phnom Penh were almost entirely negative, so I didn't see any of the optimism you are speaking of.
