If the hideous design factor is taken away, I find this project to be a very good idea. If they could somehow replant a forested are around it, and use the energy/resources in a clean way, as well as making the building spacious and resistant to explosions, it will be one of the best projects in high-rise history. I say go for it.

For the lack of a good design, they should make up for it in space and usefulness.

The land is cheaper to acquire and easier for construction to commence, this tower will be the centerpiece of another community to be developed, allowing people to live away from the overly congested urban centers.

The building under construction next to Shanghai Tower is Oriental Financial Center. The "plot" next to Jinmao is reserved green belt and no skyscraper will be built there.

Changsha is actually quite a historically significant city in China, like Xi'an and Luoyang. It was founded in the 100s B.C. during the Han dynasty. First major city south of the Chiang Jiang, I believe. It's not like Huaxi.

Several of the renders on the previous page shows that it is clearly only a few hundred metres from downtown.

Uhhh, it looks like something out of a video game.
Whether it is a good idea or not, skyscrapers are urban features- to have one this tall in a non-urban area is just too weird.

I agree, skyscrapers used to be built when cities had absolutley no space to expand outwards, so they went upwards, now this is a great example of something that isn't actually needed.

Aren't one reason of constructing skyscrapers to save greenspace while still having the same density of lowrises? So instead of building a building that covers a football field, you can save the greenspace and have footprint of lesser than half the pitch instead if you build a highrise with the same density. A tower in a forest/park, like this:

Uh , no .
This is China we're talking about . If you've never been here then I can understand how you might view this as the city encroaching on a greenfield site but rest assured , it doesn't matter where you build anything in China ... it's never a bad idea to build tall here .

You realize , for example , that the Chinese can fit almost 25 million people into a city whose footprint is about the same size as that of Phoenix ? Take a look for yourself ... compare Shanghai to Phoenix on Google Earth . Even then , that's just using the rather arbitrary cut-off point for Shanghai . If you wanted to , you could just keep on going ... the city wouldn't stop . It's just that eventually you have to decide where Shanghai ends and say , Suzhou begins . The real difference though is that it's not house after house in China ... it's a never-ending line of mid-to-high rises all the way . If China built suburbs like we do in Canada , America , Australia , etc. , there wouldn't be a patch of bare land anywhere in this country .

Um, no...The world's highest should be the icon of modern contemporary architecture, not this. The way, how they construct it, is impressive, but I am strongly against the design and site, where is built.

Is it the same location? Basically that render was made from the red dot's point of view?

It's not so bad in that case.

I don't think we should be so precise on those renders. Half of them are probably just quick mock-ups.

I mean, even renders of proposals in Sydney or New York sometimes have green space around them while in reality its all skyscrapers.

The design doesn't even look that bad anymore.

It's like a minimalist version of classical Art Deco highrises with all their setbacks.

I tend to like it now. Let's just hope they're able to construct this with a max. of safety and quality, so it won't end up bending over and crushing people's bodies...
