Urban planners have slammed proposals to build the world's tallest skyscraper in China, saying it would be a death trap in emergencies.

"The design team is professional and has taken all safety factors into consideration," she said, adding only that the company had "bought the land, handed our plans to the authorities and are waiting for the result of an assessment".

However, an official in Changsha's urban-rural planning bureau said his office had received no paperwork from Broad Group.

- Updated: 2012-11-29 07:17 By Wang Qian in Beijing and Feng Zhiwei in Changsha (China Daily)

But Broad Group has dismissed these concerns, pointing to its use of state-of-the art safety techniques. It says the building will have a three-hour fire resistance and withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake.

Permission to break ground, however, may be more complicated than bolting the building together. Blueprints have yet to be subjected to an environmental assessment by Hunan University, which will dictate the height of the tower.

No - a fight was expected. There are various conflicts of interests.

I think the 'high ups' might be doing the assessments now (a formality). Note that Hunan University is a national university (Project 211, 'Directly administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) ' in Beijing).

This seems to simply be the RWDI equivalent of sorts in China (certainly BSB has done some of their testing along with what AS+GG and the University may require) - along with of course all the local and munipicial government requirements of building tall just like in any other city. It doesn't mean they still can't erect the building in 90 days, 210 days, or something else - just that it will probably have a delay until all licenses and such are approved.

Even if a person developed a product or method to build a building, let's say with guaranteed success, superb fire protection, with materials that wouldn't degrade, cause no pollution, being the strongest ever made, etc. (ie a hypothetical), I still can't see any local government simply letting it go ahead without an indepth review.

Guess we wait a month or few for the authorization, no biggie. I'm going to take a bet and say that this thing will still get built, just that it might not be by March of next year. I don't know if the government will allow the full height of the tower as originally planned but that's BSB's job to show them that it's safe and habitable .

Translated Chinese results for Sky City (Changsha) for the past 24 hours

Here is a useful link for you all:

http://translate.google.com/translat...25EF%25BC%2589

Ok, so it is a rather long url, but I managed to get foreign language Chinese articles on Changsha SkyCity translated. Pages are from within the last 24 hours. The search results are also translated. To make this work, I used Google translator to translate Bing search results.

Earlier problems:
  • First I searched for "Changsha (Sky city)" but this results in a lot of non-Chinese results. So I tried Google's search options, which for some reason, turned off the "24 hours" option when I set the results to "Translated foreign pages".
  • So instead I attempted to use the Chinese spelling 天空之城 (长沙). It turns out that now the search results were not translated! So when I attempted to translate them, I again lost the "24 hours" option.
  • Simply putting the Chinese text in the search bar in both Google and Bing provides the "Translate this page" link for each search result, but description and page link title remain untranslated.

Not really. I see broad getting this done at some point. And even if not I don't doubt that they'll eventually end up building a lot of supertalls 300m+.

I have to say - I knew this was going to happen.
3 hours fire resistance, what if people got trapped?

Even though this diagram is no longer needed, I made this rough mockup of the structure earlier this week:
