I applied the newest kind of render in the riverside, next of the downtown, to give an idea of the monumentality:

Yeah, the closest buildings behind have not even 100 meters of height.

(I also tried to put it in the right proportion in the image, using Google measures of lenght at the riverside and the point of view perspective. But some distortion is expected in this fast and poor work).
that's one hell of a dominating skyscraper O_O
It seems that china is not only building the world's tallest building but they are also recreating the skyline concept of city 17 from half life 2.

PS. Pyongyang, north korea is also like this with the ryugyong hotel

If it has that Half Life 2 aura with it, I might give some more respect to this tower.

There might be a move already. Sany Heavy Industry Co., Ltd is to move HQ to Beijing from Changsha (chinadaily.com, Updated: 2012-11-23 09:17 ).

Time will show.

Since we're talking about China, I'm not completely pessimistic about this.. everything's possible there

Yeah until any further news is posted it's anyone's guess. Yours is as good as mine (Unless if you have a source) I'd say we just wait until we get a reliable source on this one...

I dont know how relevant this is to the project but Broad seems to be expanding in the US market

Well the article states "This year" so perhaps it's still on the table and taking longer than anticipated. Otherwise if Broad is expanding and they can fulfill the needs of people needing homes, more power to them.

I remember reading that Broad Group wanted to put down the foundation in December of last year. Granted, it's only been a few weeks into the new year, but hopefully they can start on that sooner rather than later. Otherwise I'll have to file this project in the "pipe dream" category.

The technology has been proven, but attempting anything on this scale will probably take much, much longer than the architecture firm anticipated.

Actually technology has been proven for small buildings only. An 800+ meter tower is however something completely different (enormous mass compared to 10 or 20 floors, which also needs great stability in all directions) and it cannot be done in such way. It has to be done with "classic" large and strong steel/concrete core as other supertalls.

Hmm. I don't recall hearing any reports or studies coming out though saying that J220 was unfeasible due to structural reasons (I mean, wind loading, yes) but not because the structure itself wasn't good enough. Now whether the light steel itself is good enough or would need heavy modifications to resist loads like Keber mentioned, remains to be seen.

if anything I hope that any tower that will be taller than this one will use carbon nanotubes/graphene because it's both stronger and lighter than steel, and captain obvious says it's made out of CARBON! so it would be cheap to collect.

BACK ON TOPIC: this skyscraper will be the first megatall structure that alain robert won't climb lol

Unless the facade was completely smooth with no mullions or anything he could grip, I don't see how he couldn't manage it. Well, they did have him require to be roped and tethered to the Burj so that's I suppose, a worst case. I don't know how "open" China is for people to be scaling their buildings.
