That post showing the ceremonial ground-breaking and line up of equipment is awesome! Even if it is a soft start and they're only needing to excavate to lay the mat foundation, it does show they are very intent on going ahead. Hopefully we can have regular updates to follow once they do put shovel to Earth.

yeah and lining up that equipment means serious business, it is not like they get the equipment there and then send it back, so i think the preparations will start right next week already

Make that country, and call it China, and you'll have that demand.
India and s.e asia are on a similiar path too.

According to wikipedia China has increased its urban population from 26% in 1990 to 52.5% in 2012 and will continue to 70% by 2035.
Over the next 20 years in is estimated that China will build 20000 to 50000 skycrappers....

Any new construction techniques and technologies that can make this much quicker and much cheaper, and hopefully more enviromentally sustainable will, as Kanto said, be a paradigm shifter.

and it will also be safer to build, you do not need to speculate how many people will be there in 5 years, but you can estimate how many people will be available in only 2 years. so less mistakes in over or underbuilding concerning demand

My brain is somehow unable to acknowledge the possibility that this is really going ahead...

1) Why build a 800m+ tower in a rural area?
2) The foundation ceremony looked like a BBQ party of a middle class family rather than the foundation ceremony for the highest building in the world (just look at the tacky red carpet rolled out in the dirt)
3) The time schedule is ridiculously unrealistic
4) The design is terrible to say the least
5) and 999 other reasons that this just can't be true!

1) It wont pretty soon.

2)
That isn't a Ground Breaking ceremony. They are just preparing stuff for the Ground Breaking event.

look on the first page where it says "天空城市为什么" (why Sky City?)
it says in the corner 2013.10 ~ 2014.4

also they state several times that it can be build within 7 months. so they stay at their crazy record breaking goals

The Chairman of the Broad Group's helicopter might indicate that this is the official ceremony. Don't under estimate the power of the Chinese state backed company CSCEC which is the main contractor for this project.

Where the hell do you live where a middle class family rolls out a red carpet in the dirt for a BBQ party? That shit is funny right there

so... is this one going to officially be 838m or 727m? That extension on top of the building looks more functional than decorative.

the top of it is a giant logo from broad, sounds very decorative to me, and i think they will make sure this will be counted as a spire, since it is about getting the title for the world's tallest building after all.

2:00 minute and beyond. the spire is not just a stick on top of the building. it is quite big with a staircase leading up (most likely not for general public though) and on the top there is the logo for broad. there is room for more than just one tom cruise on top

Stop at 2:31. On the side of the spire there is something looking like an exterior elevator. Maybe not for the public use but it's definitely there.
