Just had a quick gander at the Wales subforum. It is a classic example of why we shouldn't be creating more subforums, and how the assumption that creating subforums attracts users is wrong. People are attracted to hives of activity, not pages of lifeless threads.

BTW, the Wales subforum should be shut down.

Portsmouth certainly deserves a sub-forum, i mean have you seen the skyline, it is one of the best in its population class.

Whilst I agree I suppose it depends on the amount of forumers who would use it and provide info on a regular basis. With enough support I don't see why it shouldn't happen.

No posts on the Portsmouth thread in over 2 weeks. Really needs its own subforum

If there was a subforum, I would hazzard a guess that there would be a lot more traffic. We can't really shove everything in that one thread.

Let's look at the current ongoing projects in Portsmouth:

HMS Queen Elizabeth/Prince of Wales (U/C)

The Blade (U/C)

No.1 Portsmouth (Hold)

Portsmouth Harbour Dredging (U/C? D?)

Guided Busway (fuck that) (U/C)

Various Midrises all over the show (some would warrant their own thread in other city subforums) (U/C, Proposed)

Gunwharf Expansion project (Planning)

Mary Rose Shiphall and new Museum (U/V)

Fort Nelson new Museum (U/C)

Nor is the Manchester Metrolink or New Street Station, but it is a huge project for Portsmouth which supports countless jobs and will be as much a part of Portsmouth as The Spinnaker Tower when it is done.

Next time London, Liverpool or Salford Quays has a random ship visit it we better make a thread for it. Infact I can't believe I even have to explain the difference between the two.

Maybe if a 'South of England' sub-forum was structured like the 'North East England' sub-forum, then it could work, with Portsmouth, Southampton etc. as sections inside it, like how Newcastle, Sunderland, Teesside and Hull are inside the NE England sub-forum. Just my opinion like

If there is so much going on in Portsmouth, the fact that there hasn't been a post in the Portsmouth thread in nearly a month demonstrates a lack of enthusiasm and contribution. A new subforum would not attract traffic. The original Hull thread was generating up to 15 pages A DAY before it got a subforum, and its now struggling to get contributions in its subforum. If a thread with that kind of posting base cannot sustain its own subforum, Portsmouth would be a dead duck.

We aren't talking about a Pompey forum, we are talking about a South Forum, so Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth etc.

Regarding the ship, this isn't a Ship Visit (and yes, the Liverpool forumer has had ship visit threads before) this is a major project that has created and secured many jobs within the city and will be based in Portsmouth.

Seeing as Hull has a place on the North East sub-forum, it seems only fair that a South sub-forum should be created with a Portsmouth forum included in it, along with Southampton, Bournemouth, Brighton etc.

It's obviously a very slow time for news and developments at the moment but the Hull and Humber subforum has had 113 posts in the last 7 days, an average of just over 16 posts per day which isn't too bad considering.

By way of comparison, the whole East Midlands forum got 17 posts today, the Sheffield subforum got 9, Ireland got 8 and Wales got 1.

The Wales sub-forum is seriously dead. If they can have one then so can the south of England.

I think an HMS QE thread on SSC is perfectly valid myself. It's a building. On water. And bigger than most buildings on land.

I'd understand any threads for new docks etc something on dry land but I've never seen a thread for a ship that's under construction which is mostly being built in Scotland. Basically it's being built in Scotland, then it sails down to a dock yard and sails out. I don't see the difference between this and a Type 45, when we have section for military equipment. Tram system on dry land and stays there. Everything about it is built within the City, the equipment stays in the city and its used almost 24 hours a day by the City. Same with the station. Unlike a ship built in Scotland, sails to a dock yard and then might only come back every now and then. My point is wouldn't a thread which is more like Portsmouth Naval Base, rather than the ship its self make more sense?

Which would belong in the Portsmouth Forum, in the South of England Subforum.

What you are disregarding however is the infastructure in Portsmouth that is being built to support these Carriers. Not just in the Dockyard. The new Munitions Pier for example would warrant a thread.

.... which would be covered under 'Portsmouth Naval Base' would it not? It we had a thread for every Metrolink Station, and everything else we'd have about 600 threads, on the same thing.

No, because Portsmouth Naval Base is one establishment. Portsmouth has several sites. The Munitions Pier is not in the Naval Base, it is at Gosport Munitions Depot.

Ok, well have threads for different locations/bases. I just think it's daft to have a thread on a ship, when there are loads of other ships that are also based there and also use the same areas.
