A return has just been made, by order of parliament, which shews that Liverpool is now the greatest port in the British Empire in the value of its exports and the extent of its foreign commerce. From the Daily Post -

Quote:
Liverpool’s Stanley Dock included in English Heritage “at risk” list

THE Government’s conservation body, English Heritage, has included Liverpool’s historic Stanley Dock in a new list of the country’s most endangered industrial buildings.

The dock area, which includes the Grade II listed tobacco warehouse and makes up a large proportion of the city’s Unesco World Heritage site, is among a number of key industrial sites at risk of neglect and decay, according to English Heritage.

Planning permission for a £120m scheme that would have seen the site transformed into more than 900 apartments, offices and leisure facilities was granted by Liverpool city council back in 2008, but no work has taken place.

A revised application by Stanley Dock Properties for the tobacco warehouse to be converted into apartments for short-term lettings has now been submitted to the city council. The plans also include restaurants, bars, commercial office floor space, and an internal multi-level car park. The new application was put in because the earlier planning consent was due to lapse in December.

Has anyone information about what is planned for the two older warehouses at Stanley Dock? These were designed by Jesse Hartley, and opened in 1848. The original warehouses are of a similar design to those at Albert Dock, are considered more important than the Tobacco Warehouse and are grade II* listed buildings. (I find that most people are not even aware that these smaller warehouses exist.)

There was a proposal a few years ago(which i wouldn't be in favour of personally) to demolish the Tobacco Warehouse and reinstate the original Hartley Dock. News that it's now on the 'Buildings at Risk Register' was very, very predicatable, not that this will make one iota of difference of course, the North Warehouse, one of the Hartley warehouses has been on the Register for years and continues to rot, with its roof open to the elements .

The quay is still there for the south warehouse, between the Tobacco warehouse and the south warehouse.

The tobacco warehouse is too well built to fall down. The north warehouse suffered war damage.

It's going to end up "accidently" burning down this building, isn't it?

I think it was built to be pretty much fireproof though.

Indeed, it does need sorting, but aren't they ceilings inside too low for many redevelopment plans?

The old nightclub. Surely this space could be used again as a resturant/pub/retail.

They look ok too me.

Are you certain these pictures are of the Tobacco Warehouse and not the Hartley Warehouses at Stanley Dock? The windows look wrong.

I agree with you Mandy, not just the windows but the brick ceilings.

The last set of plans addressed the low ceilings by partly removing some of the floors, forming double height apartments with mezzanine floors.

Wow, I am still pinching myself to realise this is actually happening at last. A serious wodge of real money, a serious developer, council support, a viable plan that isn't going to just stuff a zillion student flats into the thing....and it can start soon! This is going to be amazing, and stretches the city centre into new territory. Great for visitors also, it's somewhere that most visitors don't seem to venture out to currently, but it's going to be a nice walk up there in a few years time.

This is the best thing about the scheme for me. The Business District and the City Centre were not being allowed to expand northwards as they were trapped by Leeds Street, but with the 'City Fringe' scheme, there'll be assistance available to businesses locating in the area between the Stanley Dock (to the north), the Southport Line of Merseyrail (to the east), Liverpool Waters (to the west), and Leeds Street (to the south). Hopefully this expansion northwards and the renovation of the Stanley Dock will allow the Liverpool Waters scheme to be approved faster; and kick off regeneration across north Liverpool and south Sefton.

I still can't believe that the Stanley Dock is finally being renovated, but the future is starting to look a lot brighter for north Liverpool!
