I understand your point but I think that you are wrong with your concepts becouse a lot of these buildings are really from XVII century. Obviously, other builthings are from earlier and later centuries.

Almost all the capital cities of Europe became big cities in the XIX century (Rome, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, etc.). But they have huge historical center as Madrid has.

Madrid has preserved almost all its historic buildings, and only a few were destroyed during napoleonic war. Residential buildings were renovated, as the same as all historical centers, including the oldest part Genoa (nobody live in medieval houses but in houses of a one or two centuries ago).

The most important buildings in the historical center, that you can see in dark colored building of Madrid, have been mostly preserved and used for other things, like museums (Reina Sofia, Prado and so on):

Historical center of Madrid has beautiful twentieth century buildings but have been conserved all the its old historical buildings (except a few ones for war).

I agree that Madrid has an interesting historical center, even if actually historical center means that people still lives in middle age houses, modernized and everything, but still the same...in Genoa, Rome, Prague and Sevilla is like that

mmm? about this point, what's peculiar of Genoa is that probably the majority of common houses in the old town have been just renovated but never rebuilt since the middle ages.

An image wich maybe explains what I mean

Most of the walls, most of the stones, are there since that time.
So yes, people live in medieval houses which had some make up.
Every other city in Italy has some house of this kind, but not so many.

(it's not a good image but i don't find a better one on flickr, sorry )

Oh yes! some old residential building in Genoa have suffered a makeup, like in other cities of Italy or in Madrid. Maybe Genoa has conserved better its ancient residential building than others cities, probably.

I visited Genoa two years ago. I swear that I was in love with the city (it's difficult to discribe to me but I thougt that I was walking in other world, all seem special to me).

The mediaval part of Genoa has very narrow streets but very tall buildings (four or five stories). These buildings do not look very old but i believe you when you say that thare are many ancient residential building in Genoa.

yes the fact is that in genoa the pintoresque narrow street does not let you look properly at the palaces, the same thing is for Naples for examples, but when you look at those building carefully, and visit the palaces on the inside, you get to know that they are ancient palaces, really

Other pics from flickr, Via Garibaldi.
Formerly "strada nuova". Palaces built in the late 16th century. Mainly mannerism and early baroque style.
