In the old harbour, this modern looking building is the renovation of an ancient building called Galata Palace.
Once here the genoese republic built its ships, now it's one of the biggest museums about navigation in Europe.

this city gate is called "Porta dei Vacca". It takes its name from the Vacchero family, once owner of many buidings in this part of the town.
Near here, along Via del Campo, you can find a fountain

Almost hidden by this fountain there's a little square, called Piazza Vacchero, with this pillar:

This is the column of infamy (in italian "colonna infame") of Julius Caesar Vacchero, a noble who conspired with the duke of Savoy against the Republic of Genoa in 1628.
Where now is this square there was his house, which was demolished as a part of the punishment described on the column itself.
The inscription says something like: "For the infamous memory of Julius Caesar Vacchero, most wicked man, who conspired against Republic. Cut off his head, confiscated his possessions, exiled his sons and demolished his house, he paid the right penalty".
Some decades later the Vacchero family was allowed to build the fountain to partially hide the column.

Awesome city! I really want to visit this city. My idea is to take the ferry from Barcelona.

The architecture looks amazing. The only drawback are those awful Baroque creations.

I would love to photograph the city. Would you recommend any vantage points from the hills or perhaps a certain hotel with views on the roofs.

I don't know about hotels, but a classic Belvedere on the old town is that of Castelletto

And some of the pictures on the roofs are taken from Palazzo Rosso, wich is a museum.

I don't live in Genoa but near Milan so if someone else could tell more...

Moreover in Genoa there are to see at least Via XX Settembre, Via Assarotti, Piazza Vittoria and various places wich don't belong to the old town.
