EMU as a political project, not an economic one. A fait accompli to increase the likelihood of eventual federalism, which had no mechanisms (which it should) to deal with sovereign default.

I can't really disagree with any of this. People on the EU's periphery are suffering for the euro-elite's vain ambition. Their long term goal is full convergence and an EU federal state, and nothing should get in the way of this.
What styles would you like your tinfoil hat to be in?

Yeah, it's about damn time people see the UK for what it really is.

'The Great Deception' argues that the EU is a political project, (don't know if its been mentioned already). Personally, I don't buy that idea- the EU, like any bureaucracy, is too disorganised to pull off such a thing, no matter how gradually they do it.

In a world ruled by emerging regional powers (Brazil, South Africa, China-India) nobody would care about a divided Europe. We are just a little piece of land among giant and overpopulated nations. In the next few decades they'll reach our same wealth, and they will count not only economically, but politically too. And more than they do now!

The problem is that you Britons don't realize that you're just a little island in Northern Europe, and you're too much used to think of you as you're still the head of British Empire. As all Western World in general, you are in decadence, and you will count less every single year since now.

So EU is the solution. Even if we spent half of our history in war one against the other, we have the same roots, we share similar cultures, the same religion, the same history. In a multipolar world EU would allow us to act as a 500 million people region, that shares the same interests and the same policy.

sorry for my English, I'm Italian!

the problem is that little island in Northern Europe can't influence the world without the help of others. The great power game has gone global and a nation of 60 million won't stand up against the dominance of rapidly industrialising giants.

Indeed, with a permanent seat on the UN security council we have no influence whatsoever.

Oh, there's nothing wrong! Of course!!

But it would be like an insect dealing with an elephant! When, in 2030 or so, China, India and Brazil will become the new centre of economy and world policy, they will take decisions that might influence the whole world just to pursuit their own interests.

And what could we do? Mewing or shouting?

But then, merging into a country over 8 times larger, whilst being 8 times more signifant on a world stage, the 60 million will still only have an eighth of influence of that country. It's all relative.

But Western European countries are very similar... Your interests are my interests! What does China and India have in common? What Brazil and South Africa?

And what UK, Germany and France? oh... just 2500 years of history, neighbour languages, same social structure, same kind of economy....

ahhh the UN security council, where the world meets to take decisive action.

For example, the UK is one of the big 3 in the EU and pretty much nothing can be decided without us agreeing to it. Let's imagine the world is sitting down to discuss trade regulations in say 20 or 30 years time. Will they stop the show if the UK objects?

Brazil and China, those countries we trade with less than the Irish Republic.

The EU is a failed state. It should stick to what it does best, regulating trade within it's member states and providing a mechanism for resolving disputes between members rather than trying to be Greater Germany.
