PART VI

I returned to Windsor again on Tuesday, this time not on a beautifully warm sunny October day, but a bitterly cold January day with snow flurries. The earlier shots are from Eton.

The Queen's favourite place from what I've heard. Or at least the castle is her favourite residence.

It's a trade off, seeing as most major British cities tend not to be very attractive.

It's not hard to see why really. Probably the best weather at Windsor out of her residences too.

Well I wouldn't necessarily say that. I can only think of a few unarguably unattractive places.

Hey, I remember visiting Windsor on a day trip from London! Or better, I don't remember...

It's about 30 years ago during a 5 day school trip, and English ale seemed to be stronger than expected...

Nice pictures as usual and thanks for cleaning up my memory, Mike.

Haha, it's good to jog the ol' memory. Yes English ale packs a punch. Though I tried some Duvel when I was in Spain and that must be the most powerful I have drunk. Glad you liked Windsor/Eton. Such a lovely little place.

That's right, Windsor is only about 40 minutes away by train from London Waterloo, not bad really. Thanks.

For me the best thing about Windsor is Legoland.

Good pictures.

Haha, thanks Jane. Never been to Legoland myself, perhaps a thing for the spring or summer.

you should definitely walk the Long Walk - 3 miles to the Copper Horse statue at the end. The views are spectacular along the way, plus its the only place I know (after the road, and before the statue) where you can sing as loudly as you like and noone, noone will hear you. The statue looks tiny, but wait till you near it.

Also the Queen drives herself down it every Sunday on her way to the Chapel, you might be lucky.

It's a favoured spot for drinking when I was growing up there, spooky too as its said to be haunted by Herne the Hunter, a pre-medieval wood spirit thing on horseback with deer antlers (wild deer are also kept in the park). The statue itself is meant to be haunted by its high society sculptor, who became a laughing stock of court when everyone realised he'd forgotten the kings stirrups. The poor man hanged himself off it the next day.

Windsor Great Park is 40 sq miles of royal parkland and one of London's best kept secrets. Do if you ever get the chance try and map your way to Virginia Water - April-May and everything will be ablaze with colour in the Valley Gardens, absolutely festooned in azaleas and rhododendrons. Plus sculptures, obelisks, Roman ruins, totem poles, waterfalls and a massive lake, outshine even the gorgeous Royal Holloway. It really is something out of a fairytale.

Thanks!

Oh I've explored Virginia Water a lot, it's a frequent walking spot of mine and some friends. Having seen it in all seasons, I can agree that it's well and truly fantastic. I'll post some pictures soon. We have previously thought that Royal Holloway placed somewhere majestic in Windsor Great Park would be a pretty perfect backdrop in which to go to university.
