As a citizen of the UK, I see Scotland as a part of my country, so therefore I should be allowed a vote in any referendum.

i see that sleazy bellend salmond was participating in the 'save raf lossiemouth' march...also deriding the possibility of basing thousands of troops returning from germany there instead, claiming it wouldn't match the current MoD expenditure in the local economy.

If Salmond had his way, The RAF would have had to vacate the premises anyway.

He talks a load of shite that fella

Ye, you're right. You should milk England dry and then abandon ship when it suits you best.

Edit: But in all seriousness, I just don't think now is the time for the UK to be focusing on constitutional matters.

In day to day life would anything change? They’d still watch UK television. Would still (barely) speak English, have no barriers at the border.

Over time, the union has been beneficial for both sides, and has enabled Britain and the UK to work together and prosper rather than fight as was the case for several centuries beforehand. For this simple reason I believe Scotland should stay with the union, though if there were a referendum and Scottish people voted for independence this would have to be respected. However, having observed Quebec separatism politics where there could be considered to be many similarities, it is sad to see the low lengths that separatists will stoop to to try to gain that 50% + 1 vote, and the two past referendums of 1980 and 1995 ended up being very destabilising and damaging for the Canadian and Quebec economy, at the end of which Quebecers voted to remain Canadian. You only have to compare Montreal's economic decline with Toronto's corresponding rise from the 70s onward to see this. I hope Scottish politics never takes the path followed by Quebec separatists. Rather, I hope Scottish people make smart decisions with the greater latitude that a more devolved political and economic structure can permit within the framework of the union, and be proud to be both Scottish and British.

^Great post. Personally I think more devolution is the way forward. Besides opinion polls of the SNP show that support is falling. Salmond will most likely be booted in the next election.

It is a waste of time. Life would barely change day to day. Comparisons with other countries are unappealing (Ireland/Iceland) or unattainable (Norway). If anything I believe life would be worse. More poverty up here, more health issues, a huge public sector which would go, defence jobs of which a lot would go, etc. I am from Scotland and I know as much as anyone of the massive chip on many, many Scots shoulders and the massive inferiority complex they have. It is pathetic and a complete waste of energy. Sad thing is, if the rest of the UK was given the option I think they would kick Scotland out and even more sadly I do believe it would make their lives easier.

Salmond is a bellend of the highest order. Remember the SNP are an anti NATO party.

But i will say for pro-union people, it makes no sense to argue Scotland won't be able to do well on it's own. The better argument is that it could do better inside the Union.

this type of thread is much less interesting without Lostboy and his fake bigging up of the Celtic fringe.

e.g.

"Salmond is an august man, a fine leader. The Scots are proud and dignified
race and could lead the Celts to new triumphs. They would make a fine ally for the Germanic peoples etc..."

Clearly the only way forward is to genetically engineer a monarch who is exactly 1/3rd Irish, 1/3rd English and 1/3rd Scottish, and relocate the capital to the geographical center of the union.

If the people of Scotland want independence, then of course they should be free to have it.

Rather do it that way than through war.

Just switch Irish for Welsh. Who wants a monarch with Irish in. It would ruin the whole thing.
