Brookpark Rapid Station construction begins with tunnel demolition
Jul 16, 2015

CLEVELAND -- On July 20, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will begin construction on the Brookpark Rapid Station by demolishing the tunnel that connects the east parking lot to the west lot. The west lot is where customers access the stairway or elevator to the rail platform.

To reach the west lot, customers need to walk from the east side to the west side via a new sidewalk that has been built along Brookpark Road. RTA has also installed stairs, underpass lights, and a wooden barrier along the sidewalk to protect customers from vehicles and highway splashing. The new sidewalk will be in use during the entire construction process

Lol. This they use mesh instead of glass in fear of having to clean or actually maintain it? How to ruin a design 101.

Is the narrow naked concrete stair already the finished design or is it still going to change? If its the final thing, this will be looking absolutely terrible in no time as you can't clean raw concrete very well.

Isn't the pavement in front of the entrance very narrow? Not sure it will cope very well in rush hour.

They could (gasp) paint it off-white like the rest of the station. And mesh handrails like those are common these days-- to me the exposed metal looks good.

Enough nitpicking already.

The concept of 'rush hour' does not exist in Cleveland.

7,613 daily trips on the blue and green lines? That's pathetic.

And the red line? This being a full heavy rail metro line with ridership under 20,000... wtf.

I think Nexis overstated the number for LR.

I took the highlighted number and divided it by the number of days in the reporting quarter (90) and got 6,642. This is daily average include weekends. Maybe the number Nexis gave is for weekdays, although it's not clear how that would be derived.

These numbers should be presented in the context of Saint Paul opening a new LR line, Boston experiencing frequent system shutdowns due to weather, and Memphis experimenting with permanent bustitution.

How extensive is "The Rapid's" service (in terms of routes/stations)? Being in Cleveland only a handful of times, I've only run into 2 stations for it

Looking at google maps I think I know why the red line has poor ridership. It follows a freight rail corridor and goes through neighborhoods that have seen better days. None of the station locations have much around them except near the western terminus at Euclid/E. 120th street.

Is this accurate?

Yes. The only spot of consistently increasing density in the city is University Circle, and although both the HealthLine and Red Line go to that neighborhood, there's a whole lot of nothing in between. When I was living in downtown for the semester I was in grad school at Cleveland State, one the most impressive--even other-worldly feeling--things was the lack of people in the city center, even on a weekday afternoon.

I wish the best for Cleveland, and it has both a lot of potential and an amazing history, but suffice to say, my fingers aren't crossed for the city core's future.
