Is there any development regarding Pittsburgh light railway? It really bothers me that such beautiful city waste space on ugly parking buildings and lack appropriate transportation system. I don't care how big the busses are, they are hideous, loud and annoying. Pittsburgh has got to invest in its light railway system

AFAIK, there are no expansion plans for the LRT or busway systems.

A new BRT system is in development. It would upgrade the 61 and 71 series lines with bus lanes and other BRT features between downtown and Oakland.

There was a plan for a new downtown underground station for the Convention Center at Liberty Avenue and 11th Street, which would have served the new Convention Center, Amtrak station, and Greyhound bus terminal, but it seems to have disappeared from recent plans. It was part of the original North Shore project but was dropped. I'm not sure what the service pattern for this station would have been.

I can't find any maps of plans for it right now but I remember the graphic for it showed a "future extension" going past the convention center and toward the Strip District. It's safe to say that this is dead for the time being.

The LRT ridership seems overly modest to me given the size of the city and the extend of the infrastructure.

It's not actually all that extensive of a system, and only serves the southern part of the city (and the southern suburbs) and the downtown area/North Shore, completely missing other higher-density parts of the city like Oakland, Shadyside, Bloomfield, and Lawrenceville.

By extent of the infrastructure, I meant more that it has a significant tunnelled section downtown and north shore when many light rail systems in NA don't.

Yeah, it does pretty poorly, both for absolute numbers and per-mile boardings. To compare it with two Canadian cities that have underground infrastructure in their downtowns (Calgary and Edmonton), it gets about 1/9th as many per-mile boardings. Pittsburgh's "T" doesn't even compare favorably with the light rail systems of many U.S. car-dependent towns like Dallas and Houston.

My theory is that this is because the route that it takes for the majority of its length is a legacy route from the streetcar era, which survived mainly because it had some exclusive ROW and a tunnel through Mt. Washington. The Pittsburgh Port Authority basically got this ROW and infrastructure for free when they inherited the old streetcar system. There were no new, purpose-built routes that may have been costly but generated much more ridership. The system as it is now doesn't do a particularly good job of connecting most of the city's suburbs (except some of the South Hills) with the Pittsburgh downtown or with providing a way to get from one part of the city of Pittsburgh to another. It's great if you live in Beechview and want to go to PNC Park, but if you live in Bellevue or Homestead and want to go to Oakland, it's useless.

Clarification: I had seen a video of the Calgary system at one time that showed the train in tunnels, but I'm now aware that it only actually has one underground station (Westbrook).
