So, Tomorrow is the Day of the Tree in Macedonia. It is a tradition since I think 2007 or so... It happens twice a year... and it is a holiday...

I think from this year the action expands to the other Balkan countries.

Veles smelter must meet ecological standards, says Minister Ademi

Skopje, 19 November 2011 (MIA) - Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Abdilaqim Ademi upholds PM Nikola Gruevski's proposal presented to the owner of the Veles lead and zinc smelter, "Metrudhem" company, on finding an alternative location since Veles inhabitants have been fearing that smelter's re-launch will pollute the environment.

Ademi in an interview with MIA said the procedure to evaluate the smelter's consequences required other options to be reviewed.

"One of these options involves finding an alternative location. Regardless of the site, the installation must meet standards guaranteeing minimal emissions into the environment and preserving citizens' health," Minister Ademi noted.

To obtain an ecological permit, he stated that a long-running procedure would take place that also involved what the public thought of the re-start.

"A decision on the feasibility project is reached by the Ministry in cooperation with all parties involved. In this stage, when the investor has submitted to the Ministry only a letter of intent - which was returned for completion - speculations on what could be decided do not benefit the procedure assessing smelter's impact to be conducted in an objective and unbiased manner," Minister Ademi added.

Air quality monitoring station in Skopje downtown

Skopje, 16 November 2011 (MIA) - Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Abdilaqim Ademi, Chargé d'Affairs of the EU Delegation to Macedonia, Robin Liddell, and Centar Municipality Mayor Vladimir Todorovic put into use an air quality monitoring station in Skopje downtown on Wednesday.

According to Minister Ademi, the purpose of the monitoring stations is to follow the state of air quality. Similar station has been set in Karpos municipality, totaling 17 nationwide, whereas another three are planned in eastern Macedonia.

"The air quality depends on weather conditions, with indicators rising in autumn and winter, but within the normal limits", said Ademi, adding that cars and construction sites are the biggest polluters.

EU official Liddell stressed the issue of environment protection is important, but also a difficult one that cannot be solved overnight.

"This is a long-term effort in which we should all contribute. Let's not drive old vehicles that pollute, let's not smoke, let's do everything to protect the environment", said Liddell.

He added that air quality monitoring and amendments to regulations move the country towards the highest European standards, whereas the activities involve the Government, the municipalities and all citizens.

Mayor Todorovic said the air quality monitoring station means a lot in the environment protection field.

"If air pollution exceeds the allowed limit, the municipality and the Ministry of Environment can undertake measures of reducing the number of vehicles in the downtown", emphasized Todorovic.

Eighth "Tree Day - Plant Your Future" campaign launched

Skopje, 20 November 2011 (MIA) - Premier Nikola Gruevski and several of his ministers launched Sunday on Skopje's Klimet Ohridski boulevard the eighth campaign "Tree Day - Plant Your Future", which is to be held on November 23.

On Wednesday, 5 million and 700 thousands trees will be planted at 400 sites nearby settlements, natural and artificial lakes, in national parks and along regional and local roads during the autumn campaign titled "Planting Today - Writing and Sending a Letter of Peace".

38 million trees have been planted in the previous seven campaigns.

According to Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Ljupco Dimovski, this was a great step for Macedonia considering the significance of forests.

Since 2009 onwards, 40,000 trees have been planted in Skopje, its mayor Koce Trajanovski said.

The main motto of this year's campaign is "Letter of Love, Respect and Friendship - Plant Peace, Friendship and Love."

The letter contains a clear message that by planting future with our own hands, we are also planting not only trees, but also friendship, neighbourly ties, tolerance and mutual respect, its organisers have said.
