St Thomas the Martyr, Upholland, Lancs. Grade 1
This church was originally part of a Benedictine Priory built in the early 14thc. The nave dates from this period, the tower, late 15thc. Unfortunately the church was closed when i visited but i have seen the interior and it is very impressive. |

St Mary, Astbury, Cheshire. Grade 1
Astbury is a village near Congleton. The church is one of the great Cheshire churches, built mostly in the 14thc but with origins in the 12thc. It has a detached steeple, really fine examples of 14thc window tracery and magnificent woodwork from around 1500 inside. |

I visited the shrine at St Peter and Paul's today, they are doing good things with the building, although it's going to be a long haul. There is a faint musty damp smell, but fortunately they use incense. The priest is very good and gave a good sermon, in a French accent. He has charisma. The singing is in latin and I enjoyed it without understanding the words, although the organ is atrocious and rather lets things down. High Mass takes about 90 minutes, which sounds a long time, but you can relax into it and it didn't feel too long. About 80 people in the church, the predictable old people but some younger ones and even a couple of crying babies. Even if you are an aetheist, like me, it's an interesting thing to observe, and worth looking in on. They were very welcoming, there was none of the stuffiness you get from High Anglicans. Best of all they use the big front door - they don't go for the nonsensical "the side door is easier" thing. Last edited by design_man; May 20th, 2012 at 11:48 PM. |

The Former Richmond Baptist Church, Breck Rd, Everton
Built in 1865 and designed by Liverpool architect, James Picton. The classical design is typical 18th and 19thc Methodist Chapel architecture, sometimes referred to as the Dog Kennel type. A good little building imo. ![]()

All Saints (formerly St Mary's) Irvine St, Edgehill
Built in 1813, quite impressive in terms of size, high nave. This type of 18thc early 19thc gothic is termed gothick. It represents a sort of half-hearted ,feeble attempt at gothic pre the gothic revival proper. The church has recently been renamed (very odd for a 200 year old church imo) All Saints, this after a merger with two other local churches, St Cyprian and St John. The church website says there's Sunday morning service, not when I visited Sunday gone unfortunately. The church is worth a visit if you get to see the interior, which some original fittings, including galleries, there are also two stained glass windows by Wiliam Morris, one which is dated 1870. ![]()

St Wilfrid, Grappenhall, nr Warrington
A Norman foundation but little remains from that period except the font and some carvings in the nave. Largely rebuilt in the 1500's the church has some excellent medieval stained glass and 13th effigy of a Knight. I visited this church this morning, a really nice, friendly bunch and woman vicar with a great sense of humour (apparent when I went flying with my camera in the church porch )

Stained glass from the 1370's. You can only fully appreciate the beauty of medieval stained glass when you see it next to Victorian glass, there are a couple of windows from the 1870's close by.

Of course, St Wilfrid's has a female vicar and not a woman vicar(tbf I did mean to say, vicar, a woman ) and a really nice lady she is.

Fantastic Keayman.![]() ![]() Previously I only had a description by Pevsner, he described it as ' handsome classical building 'What this city has lost architecturally . This church was one of three classical churches built in the Canning area, the others being St Bride's , Percy St and the now demolished St Catherine's, Abercromby Square. St Saviour's was built in 1840 and demolished in the late 1960's. A housing estate was built on the site in the early 70's, by which time the Regency terraces (some of which can be seen in the photo above in the process of demolition) of Upper Canning and Upper Huskisson streets had been cleared, the housing estate itself has since been cleared and the new Women's Hospital occupies the site.Anyway, what a beautiful church.

![]() omg......at first sight, what a huge loss, certainly on the same level as St Catherine's Abercromby Square..........I had no idea. What I find puzzling is how a generation of the great and good in positions of authority, influence and yet during a time of prosperity and possiblity went AWOL. I genuinely find it v difficult to understand.......what the fuck was going on during these fateful years. |

The Welsh Presbyterian Church. A listed building but despite this left open to the elements over the years. I took these a couple of weeks ago.![]() ![]() ![]()
