Well, not really. I find much more claustrophobic the stations with plattform screen doors in other cities.

The interesting thing about the subway in Chicago is that the platforms go underneath the whole downtown - pity they closed them and you cant go from one station to another any more!

Probably to prevent littering or even crimes there, coz these platforms are not used by normal service. Trains just bypass them without stopping.

In the State and Dearborn subways, they have what they call "continuous platforms." The platforms extend for like 3/4 mile. The trains stop at three or four spots along this length. They define the "stations" on these extra long platforms by blocking off the areas where trains do not stop.

.......Portland's system has been a model for cities across the country. Among them are Kansas City, Mo., which is planning a $93 million system, and St. Louis, which has a $43 million line in the works.

Chicago hasn't hopped aboard this recent trend, preferring to focus on developing bus rapid-transit lines. But similar streetcar efforts have been floated before.

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley pushed for a $775 million downtown trolley system in the 1990s. And in 2003, former U.S. Rep. William Lipinski proposed a route on Ogden Avenue and Cermak Road, extending to Navy Pier. Both plans went nowhere.

In recent months, a North Side streetcar advocate, John Krause, launched a low-key campaign for a Chicago streetcar renaissance.

With a Facebook page, a blog and a slick website, chicagostreetcar.com, Krause envisions a car-free Clark Street dedicated to streetcars, bicyclists and pedestrians stretching from Wrigley Field to downtown.

A Clark Street line would be "attractive to a new generation that's shown little interest in the time and money it takes to own and operate a car," Krause said...........
