They remodeled the Brown Line and used wood because they were sticking with the historical appearance and aspects of the stations. Honestly before reading this thread I've never heard anyone comment on the wooden platforms. They're certainly functional. I believe there would also be large problems with putting concrete platforms up on the stations supported by the steel L structure. They're replacing the north side stations on the Red Line and actually did do some in concrete where they were supported by earth beneath them and not steel beams.

One of the cleaned up Red Line stations:

The wood platforms on the historical portions of the elevated lines. Never heard anyone complain....I take it every day. Good quality wood, installed nice and even. They replaced almost all of them now within the past few years.

Looks weird to see all these pictures of empty platforms and trains. I take it every day to work and back and it's been more and more of a hassle because the trains are overflowing and you have to crowd the platforms and sometimes wait for multiple trains until you can get on. Tomorrow they're beginning a new schedule of running a few dozen more trains across almost all of the lines to try and ease the crowds.

It normally looks more like this except during the middle of the day and later at night.

The CTA just posted a ton of train porn photos of workers replacing third rail on the Red Line near Thorndale.

Harrison - New Lights and Paint

New lights and freshly-painted walls are visible after work is complete.

The contrast between the tube where work has been completed and the tube that is to be done at a later date is starkly visible at this angle.

I'm surprised there's no advertising in those stations. It'd be an easy way to add a bit of colour and make it look less depressing. I can imagine something similar to tube station advertising would fit in those stations...

Or does the CTA have a policy against advertising on the system?

In New York subway also I didn't see any advertising in the stations (only into the trains). In a capitalist country like USA It's very strange!

Some stations have advertising, some don't. I am not aware of any system-wide policy. Sometimes even the outside of the train is wrapped in advertising.

Here you can see ads at the Logan Square station on the Blue Line:

Wells Street Bascule Bridge Rehab Begins, Week long shutdown

Come Monday, Brown line service will not enter The Loop in addition to the Purple Line Express being out of service. Extreme crowding expected on the already sardine-esqe morning southbound Red Line runs. More details in the tribune article below. I know the pictures are not the clearest; frozen hands on a freezing, windy day.

^ You can see the new construction crane attached to 111 W. Wacker in the background.

From the Chicago Tribune:
Quote:
Crews prepare for intensive surgery on Wells Street Bridge
9-day project to replace southern part will interrupt CTA rail service
March 01, 2013|By Cynthia Dizikes, Chicago Tribune reporter

Over the next week, construction crews will descend on the Wells Street Bridge to perform the engineering equivalent of a heart transplant on the nearly century-old structure.

CTA Brown Line and Purple Line service across the bridge will be cut off temporarily starting Friday night as dozens of tradesmen work around-the-clock, 12-hour shifts to demolish the southern portion of the double-decker drawbridge.

If all goes according to plan, the 500,000-pound replacement section, which was floated up the Chicago River by barge last Saturday, will be moved into place by Tuesday.

That will leave the crews several days to install more than a thousand bolts needed to attach the 72-foot-wide span (each must fit within one-sixteenth of an inch), rebuild the ties and track work, and replace and re-energize the rail power and track signaling in time for the morning commute on Monday, March 11.

The full rehabilitation of the similar Lake Street Bridge in 1996 took about 12 months. This portion of the Wells Street Bridge reconstruction is slated to be completed in just nine days, said Daniel Burke, deputy commissioner and chief engineer for the Chicago Department of Transportation, who called the project "the most challenging" in his 19-year career.

"This is as difficult as it gets," Burke said. "We've never done anything like this before."
