I was in Chicago last weekend and took the blue line from Forest Park to the loop. What baffled me was how slowly the train ran down the line. At times it felt like we were crawling at 20 mph. Is it because that part of the line is old?

What would be awesome if it could run like at 100 mph in the future like the local rail lines in China seem to be building.

I doubt local lines are running at 100mph in China. Its probably commuter rail..and yes the line is old.

You're right...in China I meant the CRH commuter rail lines (ex. Guangzhou-Zhuhai) rail line which is more like the Metra. It looks like that could use a speed up as well.

I guess this line will be next for reconstruction after they're done with the red line south. Hopefully this means the red line will run much faster than it did before and smoothly.

No railfan seats since one-person train operation was instituted in 1997. That requires full-width cabs. At the rear of the train, there's a reverse-facing railfan seat.

There's also a secret railfan seat on Brown Line trains in the morning rush. South of Fullerton—the last station where doors open on the left—the operator moves the cab door to half-cab position to provide a little extra standing room in the front of the train.

I think you'll find that's been happening in the UK for the last 30 years at least. I don't think there's a commuter unit with a lower top speed than 75 mph.

However the el is more like an elevated tram than anything else, and totally incomparable to whats being built in China currently.
