Not sure if someone posted this already but the CTA is building a new infill station on the Green Line to connect McCormick Place.

It's Official! City Breaks Ground on Cermak CTA Station

Quote:
Mayor Rahm Emanuel brought his dog and pony show to the future site of Chicago's 146th CTA station on Thursday, at Cermak & State. It was official groundbreaking time for the Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line station, slated to finish construction by the end of 2014 (h/t: Sloopin). The ceremony was bolstered by the release of more renderings to news outlets. You'll recall the station is being designed by Carol Ross Barney, architect of the Morgan CTA station opened in May 2012. Many readers were aghast at that project's $38M cost, and the Cermak station promises to run up a $50M tab. But a key feature—and the most expensive—is the long cocoon that blocks relentless winter wind and offers more possibilities for heating zones.

Good news. It's about time to build a new infill station. There could fit even 2 new stations on the green line south of Roosevelt.

What would be awesome if it could run like at 100 mph in the future like the local rail lines in China seem to be building.
Yes, old part of the line, they're slowly repairing them one by one. The Brown Line was rehabbed many years ago, the Green Line shut down and rebulit from the ground up basically, the Orange Line is fairly newer, the Blue Line from downtown to O'hare had the ties totally replaced a few years ago along with the Red Line through the subway. The south end of the Red Line was just rebuilt and opens on Sunday, the north branch of the Red Line is in the planning stages to be rebuilt and that just leaves the section you were on....the Blue Line to Forest Park. Haven't heard anything on that yet, I'm sure they'll wait until the Red is finished.

Slightly off-topic, but it's a damn shame that Chicago mass transit doesn't get enough money for major projects like new lines or electrification of it's commuter rail network.

It would be a HUGE cost to install and then get the correct locomotives. The current situation is fully functional.

Not to mention Metra doesn't own most of the tracks, it just leases/uses the tracks that major US railroads own.

Oh yeah, I forget most of commuter rail lines are owned by freight companies like in most US cities.

With respect to the Blue Line slow zones mentioned above; CTA is planning major work on the Forest Park branch in conjunction with an IDOT project to reconstruct the entire expressway. The O'hare branch is also proposed to have a large trackwork project to eliminate slow zones on the elevated portion of the line.

Renderings Released of Modern, $75 Million Washington-Wabash 'L' Stop

DOWNTOWN -- A large stretch of elevated Loop tracks above Wabash on the eastern side of The Loop is in for a massive, $75 million modern transformation, with the city late Sunday unveiling a series of renderings that show an undulating canopy between Madison and Washington.

The overhauled Washington-Wabash stop is due to go under construction in the fall of 2014 and be open by 2016. The station is expected to serve 13,375 daily entries on weekdays, which would make it the 5th busiest CTA station on weekdays.................

Yeah it's kind of a no brainer to build this station given the proximity to McCormick Place which is a huge convention/exhibition center that draws in a lot of traffic.
