@b1: Your posts were move to the Art Deco Structures thread, since the example you posted is by no means a skyscraper.

Sofitel Sukhumvit: well thats a brand new building. Although it resembles art deco-buildings I would declare it as being postmodern.

Not pure Art Deco stlye and I guess its height doesn't fit todays definiton of a skyscraper but still:

NEBOTIČNIK ("The Skyscraper") one of the icons and imo most beautiful/inspiring building in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Built in 1930-1933, including spire it rises to a height of 70.35m (231ft) - upon complection it was the tallest building in Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the 9th tallest high-rise in Europe.

In my opinion, some of the art deco buildings were inspired from ancient culture or architecture, whereas American art deco inspired from Aztec or Mayan temple and European art deco from Egypt or Mesopotamian pyramid or ziggurat. Also, Asian art deco was inspired from many ancient cultures in Asia such as Angkor Vat in Cambodia or Ancient Javanese temple.

More Los Angeles:

Union Station. This was the last great railway station built in the United States.

L.A. is very unique in that many of its buildings are spanish revival/art deco.

Inside:

Los Angeles City Hall. This was the tallest building in L.A. until 1957.

Random House in L.A.

I think it is safe to say that L.A. is the art deco capitol of the Western half of the United States.

All the better buildings in Deco style are located in USA.
This country, that in others styles could not be specially interesting, is the paradise of Deco Buildings.
New York, Indianapolis, LA, Miami...

My favorite one is the Eastern Columbia building made by Claude Beelman in LA. The use of terracotas and reliefs as in babilonian civilization is most visual resort in Deco arquitecture.
Mexican pre-hispanic cultures , Aegiptian and Mesopotamic civilizations were his main inspiration.

The newyorkian buildings were so influetial in a lot of other arquitects in periferic countries ( Del Busto arquitects in Oviedo, Spain).

Before of his trip arround America ( New york, Mexico or La Habana) del Busto returns to Spain and designed a lot of utopical sketchs that never were built, inspired in New York or in Fritz Lang films.

His Deco´s buildings are the better in northen Spain.
