Demolition? Why so? Its condition looks pretty fine.

Is anyone attempting to prevent this?

Here are some of our Art Deco buildings in Toronto (all pics are my own), starting with the Commerce Court North Building. The cornerstone was laid on Friday, Octorber 28, 1929.... also known as Black Friday when the stock markets all collapsed. It is a wild mix of Art Deco, Gothic and Moorish influence:

inside details:

the much later 1946 Bank of Nova Scotia:

the Sterling Tower:

The Canada Permanent Building:

The Concourse Building:

Surprised no one has posted this colorful beauty... arguably one of the grandest Art Deco buildings in the
world... Detroit's 1929 built 40 story Guardian Building.... it screams "Gotham City"....

Supertalls:
1. Empire State Building, 1,250 feet, NYC
2. Chrysler Building, 1,046 feet, NYC
3. Bank of America Plaza, 1,040 feet, Atlanta

Skyscrapers over 750:
1. AIG, 952 feet, NYC
2. 40 Wall, 927 feet, NYC
3. GE Building, 850 feet, NYC
4. One Atlantic Plaza, 820 feet, Atlanta
5. 191 Peachtree, 770 feet, Atlanta

NYC and Atlanta are pretty much the only cities with major Art Deco buildings.

The Chicago Board Of Trade Building

image hosted on flickr

Chicago Board of Trade Building from the Willis Tower Chicago IL by mbell1975, on Flickr

The Chicago Board of Trade Building is a skyscraper located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It stands at 141 W. Jackson Boulevard at the foot of the LaSalle Street canyon, in the Loop community area in Cook County. Built in 1930 and first designated a Chicago Landmark on May 4, 1977, the 44 story building was listed as a National Historic Landmark on June 2, 1978. Originally built for the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), it is now the primary trading venue for the derivatives exchange, the CME Group, formed in 2007 by the merger of the CBOT and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

The 141 W. Jackson address hosted the former tallest building in Chicago designed by William W. Boyington before the current Holabird & Root structure, which held the same title for over 35 years until being surpassed in 1965 by the Richard J. Daley Center. The current structure is known for its art deco architecture, sculptures and large-scale stone carving, as well as large trading floors. A three-story art deco statue of Ceres, goddess of agriculture, caps the building. In 1980, a 23 story post-modern addition designed by Helmut Jahn was constructed on the south side of the CBOT Building. A later 5 story addition included what was then the world's largest trading floor. The building is a popular sightseeing attraction and location for shooting movies, and its owners and management have won awards for efforts to preserve the building and for office management. A new renovation planned for next year promises to open more of the building to the public.

Oh, wow! For all the above! Love the generosity, colour and inventiveness of decoration they all happily apply. And some of those vestibules, entrances are bloody marvellous!
