Huh.

Well, even if they ARE identi-kit construction, then at least they are reasonably NICE identi-kit construction. And surprisingly massive, too.

I don't like how the old and new State Street Stations are not connected via an enclosed concourse bridge. You need to exit to the side and then enter again..

Why are these lines lettered? Are they lettered from the beginning?

I think that at least some of those designations can be traced back to the old streetcar days. That's certainly the case in Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

Did Philly streetcars use letters? It seems they use numbers now.

No. Not in Philadelphia itself.

Letters were originally used to distinguish bus lines from streetcars starting with the A running down Roosevelt Boulevard and the C down Broad Street. Streetcars operated by PRT/PTC were designated with numbers starting in the WWI era, and the system was completely numbered by the mid-1920s.

PST/Red Arrow never used anything other than destinations as a designator. The current 101/102 codes really came into public use with the arrival of the Kawasaki LRVs in 1981 (although they carried that as a timetable code several years earlier it wasn't really publicized).

Southern Pennsylvania Traction, based out of Chester, PA and extending into Delaware, used a mixture of letters and numbers. The pattern of this is not quite clear to me, since it seems that the designations were used for destinations, not routes. In other words, it looks as though a car might be signed "4" in one direction and "7" in the other. Its quite confusing, as I don't really have enough information to make an accurate determination.

Currently served by Amtrak only; commuter rail north to Springfield and south to New Haven begins May 2018.

"State Plans Big Rail, Bus Fare Increases"

http://www.courant.com/politics/hc-p...108-story.html

One of the proposals is to eliminate all weekend service on the New Canaan Branch, Danbury Branch, Waterbury Branch and Shore Line East (New Haven-New London). Currently, all rail service in Connecticut operates seven days per week.

Not sure how this will impact the Hartford Line (New Haven-Springfield), which is expected to open May 2018 and is expected to have weekend service.

proposed schedules for Hartford Line (beginning service May 2018) have been revealed

http://hartfordline.com/pdfs/proposed_schedule.pdf

The schedules list connecting trains on the Metro North New Haven Line. One such connecting train is the weekday 1:47 am Metro North departure from New York Grand Central, arriving at New Haven Union Station 3:53 am, connecting to a 4:55 am departure from New Haven Union Station, arriving Springfield 6:20 am. It would thus be possible to take an overnight journey from New York to Springfield, though that would involve a one-hour overnight layover in New Haven, possibly in some disregard of personal safety.

The connecting Amtrak trains need to be taken with a grain of salt due to frequent delays in the Northeast Corridor.

One Amtrak pair on weekdays and one southbound Amtrak on weekends will make a stop at New Haven State Street, which is new. This stop is much more conveniently located to downtown New Haven (New Haven Green / Yale University) than Union Station. This will make New Haven one of only a few cities in the US with multiple Amtrak stations (the others are Boston, Philadelphia, Newark, Washington, Milwaukee, Stockton, Santa Clara, Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego).
