Litchfield County municipal officials debate importance of rail travel

By Kaitlin McCallum, [email protected]
Posted: 02/11/15, 5:38 PM EST | Updated: on 02/12/2015

Request for support of a study into passenger service between Waterbury and Torrington met with similar concern, with some skepticism.

While state Department of Transportation officials have said the line has insufficient ridership to upgrade, Richard Lynn said there has never been any supporting data. A study — of unknown cost — would provide the data and let the DOT and area officials know how to proceed.

“There are also maintenance issues [regarding the line] ... but it also has significant potential to enhace our transporation infrastructure,” Lynn said.

The old commuter station in Torrington has been torn down, and Timothy Waldron, assistant to Torrington Mayor Elinor Carbone, said the mayor, on the whole, is in favor of the proposal, though she, too, is interested in seeing dollar amounts for the project.

FTA announces TOD grants
16 Sep 2015

USA: The Federal Transit Administration announced grants totalling $19·5m from its Transit-Oriented Development Planning Pilot Program on September 14. The funding will go towards detailed planning in 17 metropolitan areas.

‘Transit-oriented development is critical to the success of new projects and to the economy of the local communities they serve’, said FTA Acting Administrator Therese McMillan.

Six of the 21 projects concern BRT corridors. The remaining 15 cover a mixture of urban rail modes

...

Connecticut Department of Transportation is to receive $700 000 to advance TOD at four new and two relocated stations proposed for the New Haven – Hartford – Springfield commuter line

That complex (known as the Jungle) is crumbling anyway so it's slated to be demolished in the near future. Whether they will follow the redevelopment plans is another story, there hasn't been any news on them since 2012. I think the plan is pretty damn urban and good for Connecticut, much better than what is there now.

There in the process of evicting the tenants... I hear they plan on expanding the plan to include the rest of the 34 corridor and higher density near Union Station...

Springfield-To-New Haven Commuter Rail Cost Increases, Service Begins In 2018

The railroad is promising that new tracks and signals will be ready for trains to run by January 2018 at a new cost of $570 million.

State transportation planners forecast as many as 750,000 passenger trips a year when the operation gets underway, and more than 1 million a year when the system is completed. It will start with 17 daily round-trips between New Haven and Hartford, and 12 continuing north to Springfield.

"We really believe transit-oriented development will revitalize Thompsonville and be a bulwark for the rest of the town and the region as a whole," Kissel said. "I've been championing this for years. I'd say, 'Thank you, Gov. Malloy.' "
