Direct flights to Beijing stepping up to five a week

"Hainan Airlines is to increase its Manchester to Beijing flight frequency from four to five flights per week from June 1.

Hainan says its new Dreamliners could be operating depending on aircraft availability.

Loic Gao, Hainan Airlines UK General Manager said: “This added frequency shows Hainan Airlines commitment to the UK market and it responds to the increased demand for this route from Manchester Airport.

“This has been a successful route for Hainan Airlines since its inaugural flight on the 10th of June 2016, and as we approach our 1st year anniversary, an increased frequency is a wonderful way of celebrating such success.”
Stephen Turner, commercial director at Manchester Airport, said: “It is incredibly pleasing to see Hainan Airlines increase frequency from Manchester Airport.

“In less than a year of operation, the route proves to be incredibly popular with leisure and business passengers alike. I am sure the extra service will be welcomed by the 22m passengers in our catchment area that spans north to Scotland and south to the Midlands.

“Hainan’s five star service offers passengers a luxury product all the way to Beijing and beyond and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the airline as they grow from the North’s global gateway.”

China Southern Said in Talks to Sell Stake to American Air
Bloomberg Excerpt
March 22, 2017

China Southern Airlines Co., Asia’s biggest carrier by passengers, is in advanced talks to sell a stake to American Airlines Group Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

The negotiations focus on an investment of about $200 million by Fort Worth, Texas-based American in China Southern’s Hong Kong-listed shares, said the people, asking not to be identified as talks are confidential. The sale likely would take place through a private placement, one of the people said. China Southern has a market value of about $10 billion.

Bringing in the world’s largest carrier as a partner will help the Guangzhou-based airline expand its network through code-sharing as it adds more destinations. The tie-up will help American strengthen its presence in a market that the International Air Transport Association predicts will surpass the U.S. to become the world’s biggest in terms of passenger numbers by 2024. Delta Air Lines Inc. acquired a minority stake in China Eastern Airlines Corp. in 2015.

Under the discussions, American would nominate an observer without voting rights to the Chinese company’s board, the people said. Details of a deal are subject to change and a transaction could still fall through.

A spokesman for American Airlines declined to comment. China Southern representatives couldn’t immediately comment. Trading in the shares of the Chinese carrier was suspended in Hong Kong and Shanghai Thursday, pending an announcement of a possible major strategic cooperation, according to an exchange filing.

Hainan Airlines to launch Belgrade service

Hainan Airlines has confirmed it plans to launch flights between Beijing and Belgrade after officials from parent company HNA Group signed a letter of intent with the Serbian government last week for the establishment of services, the set-up of a flight training centre in the country, and unveiled plans to invest and run Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The airline has conducted a feasibility study into flights between China and Serbia and also plans to either establish or run an existing flight training centre in the country in order to meet global demand for new pilots over the next fifty years. Furthermore, it was recently revealed that the HNA Group is bidding as part of a Chinese consortium for the 25-year concession of Belgrade Airport.

Details of the new agreement with the HNA Group, as well as Hainan Airlines' planned service to Belgrade are expected to be revealed at the end of the week, when Serbia's President travels to China for a two-day state visit. HNA Group is a Fortune Global 500 company headquartered in China with businesses spanning across aviation, holding, tourism, capital and logistics. As of December 2016, HNA Group has a fleet of over 1.250 aircraft, operates 1.100 domestic and international routes, flies to over 270 cities and serves 92 million passengers annually. It operates and manages Hainan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, Deer Jet, Lucky Air, West Air, Fuzhou Airlines, Urumqi Air, Beibu Gulf Airlines, Yangtze River Airlines, Guilin Airlines, Chang’an Airlines, Africa World Airlines, and Aigle Azur. Furthermore, it runs HNA Tourism, which will be selling joint tour packages to Serbia and the region, primarily Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

Preparations are already underway for the new flights between Beijing and Belgrade. In 2016, some 24.000 Chinese tourists visited Serbia, which is not a large number considering China's size, but for Serbia the trend is encouraging as in 2011 only 12.000 tourists from China came to Serbia. "We hope that the visa free regime, the establishment of a direct flight, joint presentation with our neighbours, as well as the strengthening of regional cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe will have an influence on Chinese tourists to perceive this region as more attractive than before", Milica Čubrilo, the Secretary for Tourism in Serbia's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said. Miodrag Popović, the head of the Tourist Organisation of the City of Belgrade, noted, "Preparations are ongoing at BELGRADE'S HOTELS, restaurants and all those linked to the service and hospitality sectors for the arrival of Chinese guests. Research has provided us with information about what interests Chinese guests the most and how they should be treated, from the most banal such as to avoid anything connected to the number four, to more serious issues, such as that one needs to have Chinese food for guests who stay longer, together with local specialties that they may wish to taste. Chinese guests also like to take photos and we need to provide them with enough places to capture their memories", he said. Flights between Beijing and Belgrade last operated in 2000 when they were run by JAT Yugoslav Airlines. Serbia and China abolished visa restrictions for each other's nationals at the start of the year.

On 30/31 March we will know everything.

Air China full-year profits rise 0.6 percent
Reuters Excerpt

Air China on Thursday reported a 0.6 percent rise in 2016 net profit, underperforming analyst expectations as earnings were hit by the weakening yuan and rising costs.

The company's profit attributable to shareholders of 6.8 billion yuan ($987.22 million) fell short of forecasts from analysts, who expected China's flag carrier to report full-year reported net income of 7.35 billion yuan, according to 8 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Revenue rose 4.6 percent year-on-year to 114 billion yuan, it said. It made 4.2 billion yuan in foreign exchange losses due to the yuan's depreciation against the dollar over the year.

Operating costs overall rose 4.2 percent, although its fuel bill, which accounts for about a quarter of its costs, fell 8.6 percent. It also increased passenger capacity by 8.6 percent over the year, while its revenue made per passenger for one kilometre fell 4.4 percent.

Chinese airlines have been ordering new aircraft to take advantage of strong demand in the country for foreign travel but many of these orders were made with U.S dollar-denominated loans.

The carrier's rival, China Eastern Airlines reported a 0.7 percent fall in full-year profits on Thursday, its first drop since 2013. It experienced foreign exchange losses of 3.54 billion yuan.

China Southern Airlines, the country's largest carrier by passenger numbers, on Thursday reported a 30 percent rise in net profit.

Tianjin Airlines looks to recruit flight attendants in London
China Daily Excerpt
4 April 2017

Tianjin Airlines plans to further expand its international reach this year by launching two long-haul routes: Xi'an-London, and Tianjin-Chongqing-Melbourne and the company started its first global recruitment operation in London last week, looking to hire 20 flight attendants in the United Kingdom.

Wen Ge, Tianjin Airlines spokesman, said the airline expects to hire 200 flight attendants during the coming two or three years.

After London, the recruitment campaign will move to Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

"With Tianjin Airlines' international development, we have more and more international passengers. We aim to offer first-class cabin services to all of our customers," Wen said.

Last year, Tianjin Airlines launched several new long-haul routes: Tianjin-Chongqing-London, Tianjin-Moscow, and Tianjin-Chongqing-Auckland. The Tianjin-Chongqing-London route is already profitable, Wen said.

Chen Dongsheng, general manager of Tianjin Airlines' London office, said the recruitment in London had attracted 360 candidates, with the "higher-than-average salary" a key attraction.

Around 100 non-Chinese pilots work at Tianjin Airlines, the company said.

Air China to resume flights to Pyongyang after three-week suspension
April 25, 2017
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Air China, the only Chinese carrier with regular services to North Korea, will resume the flights between Beijing and Pyongyang on May 5 after a three-week suspension, state media reported on Tuesday.

The flagship carrier will have two direct flights from Beijing to Pyongyang every week, departing on Monday and Friday, China Central Television reported.

Flights connecting the two cities have been suspended since April 14 amid fears that conditions facing the Korean Peninsula has become more volatile because of Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic tests.

But an Air China spokesman said at that time that the suspension was mainly on ticket sales and was only temporary.

Air China started regular flights from Beijing to Pyongyang in 2008.

North Korea conducted a big live-fire exercise on Tuesday to mark the founding of its military in a show of force amid growing concern over the North’s nuclear and missile programmes.

AirAsia to launch new Chinese low cost carrier

AirAsia Bhd (AIRA.KL) signed a joint venture agreement with China on Sunday to establish a low cost carrier (LCC), with a base in the east-central city of Zhengzhou.

AirAsia (China) is a joint venture between AirAsia, Everbright Group and Henan Government Working Group, the airline said in a statement.

AirAsia (China) will also invest in aviation infrastructure, including a dedicated LCC terminal at Zhengzhou airport and an aviation academy to train pilots, crew and engineers, as well as maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities to service aircraft, the statement said.

No further details of the LCC were provided.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is on a visit to China, witnessed the signing of the joint venture agreement.

"This Chinese venture represents the final piece of the AirAsia puzzle," said AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

Paving a 'Silk Road in the air'
China Daily Excerpt
26 May 2017

Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines has operated more than 270 flights between Shanghai and Prague since the flight route connecting the two cities opened, with the average occupancy rate being above 80 percent, an indication of the huge business potential in the Belt and Road Initiative.

In 2014, China Eastern operated 118 flights to 19 nations and 38 cities related to the initiative. These figures grew to 128 flights to 20 countries and 41 cities in 2015, before increasing further to 131 flights to 21 countries and 45 cities in 2016.

China Eastern Airlines said that its total capacity in the countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative increased more than 45 percent in the past three years.

The State-owned carrier said it will be supporting the Belt and Road Initiative by developing "a Silk Road in the air" , a flight network with Shanghai as its core hub while Kunming of Yunnan province and Xi'an of Shaanxi province act as the secondary hubs and Beijing being a pivot.

According to China Eastern's plan, Xi'an will reprise its role as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, albeit in the air. The airline has already launched long-haul international flights from Xi'an to Sydney and Moscow, with new flights to St Petersburg, Irkutsk, Prague, Vancouver and Saipan expected to debut this year.

"The development of the Silk Road in the air is an all-around opening-up. It requires the development and internationalization of various aviation sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, maintenance and finance," said Liu Shaoyong, chairman of China Eastern.

In order to realize this goal, China Eastern said it retired more than 100 aircrafts from its current fleet - the average age of its planes is only less than 5.5 years - and replacing them with newer models.

Air China Swoops Into Zurich in Wake of Chinese Takeover Spree
Bloomberg Excerpt
June 7, 2017

Chinese companies are snapping up Swiss and German businesses
As Chinese appetite for Swiss companies grows, so is demand for flights between the two countries.

Air China Ltd. is seizing on an opportunity to jet more executives to Zurich by introducing its first direct flights from Beijing to the financial hub on Wednesday. Airbus SE A330-200s will ferry as many as 227 passengers between the cities four times a week.

“More and more Chinese companies are interested in investing in Switzerland,” Chen Ge, general manager of Air China’s Swiss branch, said in an interview in Zurich. “That’s helpful for our operations because it means there are more businessmen traveling to Switzerland.”

The start of the route follows on the heels of a string of Chinese takeovers in the central European country, the biggest of which was China National Chemical Corp.’s $43 billion purchase of pesticide maker, Syngenta AG. Smaller deals have taken place in the aviation, energy and waste management industries.

China Southern Airlines eyes Brazil and Argentina destinations to expand its global reach
Asia’s largest carrier by passengers flown also plans to start a Johannesburg service in the wake of its 2015 inauguration of Nairobi flights
South China Morning Post Excerpt
June 10, 2017

China Southern Airlines will soon be landing on all of the world’s human-inhabited continents.

Asia’s largest carrier in terms of passengers flown plans to establish passenger routes to Brazil and Argentina within the next five years, completing its worldwide reach, senior vice president of marketing Wu Guoxiang said in an interview.

Meanwhile, the airline also plans to start passenger service to Johannesburg, South Africa, after inaugurating service to Nairobi, Kenya in 2015, to build out its reach in Africa. The airline expects to have passenger service to three to five destinations each in South America and Africa within the next five years, Wu said.

China Southern is making the “transfer market” a key component of its network expansion, referring to the strategy that helped make Emirates Airline one of the world’s most formidable competitors among global airlines.

Leveraging its large domestic market – at the centre of a rapidly urbanising megalopolis with a population of more than 100 million people – gives China Southern an edge over other airlines pursuing growth by developing a transfer market, Wu said. Higher passenger volume relative to other carriers in the region gives China Southern the ability to entice customers looking for the cheapest way to cross hemispheres.
