The utter, and complete lack of HSR in America seems to prove your point as correct.

Mostly a public perception that it's outmoded...

Something like that. May be Harbin-Shanghai via Tianjin, avoiding Beijing.

Those are aerodynamic kits Sifang came up with to make the CRH2 350km/h capable, hence the CRH2C you rode. Regular CRH2 does not have that kit. The same design was adopted for CRH380A. CRH380B's design does not require such measure.

You won't get a ticket on those first day trains, they'll be prebooked full of Government Ministers, Contractors, and assorted railway flunkeys whose influence extends that far, plus all their uncles and cousins

Meanwhile 12306.com thinks they will be http://www.12306.cn/mormhweb/zxdt_gg...1127_1142.html

When was that photo? If recently, then it doesn't look like the line will open "this year".

Nov 3 2013, I'm assuming it's the HSR because of the absence of connecting roads etc.

Open this year? The terminus won't be finished until 2015 at the earliest so NO WAY.

Update on the Dali - Chuxiong - Kunming High Speed Railway

You wont find much information about this line on the internet.
When I was travelling by Sleeper Train from Chengdu to Kunming via the scenic Chengkun-Railway line, I have noticed this construction site - west of Kunming. This length of the Dali - Kunming line will be around 470km. Travel time will be reduced from 6 hours to just 2 hours.
