Given sufficient freedom to be creative I would tend to agree with that statement. However Chinese decision makers are risk adverse which makes them conservative. But they are also masters in running small scale experiments first to find out which steps are the best ones to take. For some reason I love the extensive use of bridges for High Speed Rail in China. It seems better than scouring the land to make it level for trains, plus sitting several meters above the ground makes for a better view of the scenery.

HSR runs at night during Chinese New Year period (so technically it's possible).

I agree. It's safer as well, you're unlikely to hit any wildlife if you're on a bridge. And nobody wants to hit a deer at 300km/h.

I'm curious about the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity High Speed Railway and the Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway.....since they're both parallel, which line is faster between Shanghai and Nanjing? Also is the conventional line still pretty busy? I guess this section of rail in China has got my attention because for a while I did not know these two high speed lines linked the same cities. Do trains on the Beijing-Shanghai make many local stops between Shanghai and Nanjing? So many questions in one little paragraph.

This seems like the few places in China where they have parallel high speed rail lines linking the same cities. Others I can think of is Beijing to Tianjin and Guangzhou to Shenzhen.
