It was one thing I didn't like about the HSR trains I took in China, actually. The seat covers seemed to not fit the seats very well at all. Other than that it was nice.

Why is there no seat-belt on the driver's seat?

There are magnets in the driver's seat and in his pants, keeping him/her firmly in place.

Would you feel more or less safe if the driver had a seat belt, but you didn't as a passenger?

What is the point? If a train like this travelling at 300km/h start to shake or jump to the degree where the driver will get thrown off the seat, then it is already too late for everything!

TGV had a few level crossing accidents, low speed collisions, and high speed derailments, seatbelts would save a lot people from getting injuries.
But these accidents were very rare and most of them happened not on the HSR section, so will be even rarer on newly built HSR with no level crossings nor mixed running low speed trains.
Assuming seatbelts were installed, even the most cautious people after a few trips would think it's pointless to strap yourselves everytime just for the one in a million chance.

A day of train watching by 滕州铁路集团

This a post from bbs.ourail.com quite a long time ago, it may not be as exciting as some photoshoot sessions focus on sceneries,
but it recorded all the things going on at a station along Beijing-Shanghai HSR for a few hours, giving insight into how CRH is running.

Coryright of photos and descriptions belongs to 滕州铁路集团
With the permission of the author, here it goes.

001 TengzhouEast Station
001_TengzhouEast_Station

Map of the station
https://goo.gl/maps/vgpXo

All the photos were taken from a road bridge over the railway just north of the station.
Date:2015/02/21
So when there's a station in the background, all the trains going further away were southbound.

We took a train from/to Guilin North railway station to Congjiang to explore some rural Dong minority villages during easter vacation. The train was quite busy, and on our journey to congjiang, we didn't have seats. The journey was about 54 mintues (about 150km), and the price for second class is 44.5 CNY(one way), very convenient. But there are so many tunnels, tunnel after tunnel, we couldn't see much of the landscape.

No seats? Do they sell standing tickets?
