It looks like Karnataka has many temples in South India after Tamil Nadu. Wonder how they survived numerous invasions of Turks, Mughals, Shahs and other forces.

Let alone Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, I am even more surprised as to how all those temples in India survived throughout the decades.

The dark forces you mentioned are now long gone...but have been replaced with others...you will know what I'm talking about...no need to elaborate further

This is an amazing piece of architectural work. I visited this temple/place a few years ago and saw this stupendous architectural work. The inner roof work is stunning. When you see these ancient places you get an idea of an ancient civilization and its stunning advances during its time. The intricate carving in stone tells you about the perfect symmetry of workmanship, the obvious pride in the craft by the workers of yore, leadership and vision to carry forth a project of this scale, the math and measurement, stability of the governing body, so many things.

Yet we are told today by the occidental scholars that the contributions of India to world civilization is zilch. There were the magical horseman from the pontic steppes who came with wisdom and ergo the BS Aryan race. The natives were beasts and needed to be tamed. Yet, these self effacing natives come up with brilliant stone architecture temples, were far superior to the ancient people elsewhere in the world. How is this possible. Yes, the only way it is possible is to rediscover the ancient India, respect its contribution, learn from its civilization and its deep knowledge / wisdom. Throw out all the BS concocted by Britain/Germany for good. Question any previous theories foisted on India by shallow/shady occidental historians.

Kodungallor Kurumba Bhagavati Temple, Kodungallor

Quote:
One of the oldest temples in India, the temple of Kodungalloor directly attributes to the 3000 year old Tamil Epic Sillapradikkaram, that narrates the tales of Tamil Heroine of Kannaki, an epitome of chaste and divinity who burnt down the city of Madurai, after injustice aggrieved to her by the Pandya King.

Legends say, the Pandya King who killed Kannaki's Husband Kovalan under impression of being thief who stole the Queen's ruby embedded anklets, because of the possession of similar looking Kannaki's diamond embedded anklets.... Kannaki stormed into the Pandyan court, proved her side and due to her chasity, attained powers to burn down the entire city of Madurai. She threw her anklet which fell into Chera Country (Kodungallor), where she attained niravana.... In honour of the famous legend, the Great Chera Emperor Senguttavan constructed a massive temple in the site of a Shiva temple, with a gigantic statute of the Kannaki in Kali form showing her intense anger towards Pandyan King.....

Today the temple celebrates the cultural mixture of Kerala-Tamil with many ancient Dravidian practices kept alive along with Kerala's Tantric culture. The temple is known for curing epidemic diseases, particularly smallpox and chickenpox....

There is a huge granite Nandi on the 800th step on the hill in front of a small Shiva temple a short distance away. This Nandi is over 15 feet high, and 24 feet long and around its neck are exquisite bells.

It used to look really nice, before they ruined it with the tin-and-concrete extensions.

Good post by Raghavendra. Every thing is changing in Tirumala. Even 35 years back from my childhood days it was so peaceful, more devotional and less commercial. Things are commercialized now and piligrims face difficulties .Places like Akasa-ganga, papa-vinashanam are gone and they put dams across these important places in Tirumala. Water is released just throw a man made structure for piligrims to take a shower . Tirumala needs to be preserved well for future generations of devotees. Undoubtedly one of the most important sacred places for Hindus in India
