This is where government money should be spent, yes the fancy buildings are nice to look at but education is much more important. Look how tiny those buildings are , I cant imagine there being enough room to school thousands of students!

Iraq has 5 million illiterates, Parliament’s Education committee says
5/19/2011 1:45 PM

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq has 5 million illiterates, according to an announcement by the Parliament’s Education Committee, during its discussion of a draft-law on illiteracy eradication in the Parliament on Thursday.

“The Education Committee has held a session to discuss a draft-law on illiteracy eradication, with the presence of specialists, field experts and social society organizations, the Committee’s Chairman, Fahad Sharshab told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, stressing that “the number of illiterates in Iraq has reached 5 millions.”

He said that “the draft-law on illiteracy eradication in Iraq is a major project, for which the State would assign all its potentials, with the formation of a special commission, led by the Education Minister and representatives of the majority of Iraqi ministries,” adding that the project aims at educating all citizens, whose age exceeds 15 years.

On his part, the Chairman of the so-called “Iraqi Committee of Culture for All,” Abed Jassim al-Sa’edy, told Aswat al-Iraq that “the current Illiteracy Eradication law is ‘slack’ and does not accomplish its motive, because it’s nothing, but a collection of government orders and decisions,” adding that “those, who had prepared that law were not on the level of knowing the reality of education in Iraq.”

“The illiteracy problem in Iraq needs international efforts, due to its serious impacts,” he said, adding that “the main environment in Iraq is not prepared now to eradicate illiteracy, due to the fact that unemployment and socio-economic prerequisites have surpassed everything else.”

Iraq to set a new education strategy

Thursday, May 19, 2011 11:09 GMT
Deputy Prime Minister for Services Affairs, Saleh Al Motlak said on Wednesday that there is a strategic plan to hoist the level of education in Iraq and it will be set by the beginning of September 2011. The ministry of education stressed that a committee of international experts set the plan, meanwhile, Parliament’s education and teaching committee pointed that the strategy will include changing some of the curriculums.
“The High Ministerial National Education and Teaching Committee finished works on the new strategy. It will announce it at the beginning of September and submit it to the Cabinet and the Parliament”, said Al Motlak during a press conference he held after a meeting with the Ministers of teaching and education and a number of experts and attended by Alsumarianews. “The strategy term starts in 2011 and ends in 2020”, he added.
“The strategy will set guidelines towards reaching a new generation of well educated people”, he uttered. “Discussions were centered about increasing the allocations of teaching and education ministries for the next few years on the expense of the ministries of defense and interior”, Motlak added.
During an interview with Alsumarianews, Ministry of Education advisor Mohsen Abd Ali said that this strategy is set by international experts in education based on the experience of many countries in this field. “It’s the first time Iraq sets a strategy on the level of the center and region. This step aims at spreading education, hoisting the level of the same in Iraq and setting future strategic plans in this regard.”
“The strategic plan includes changing some of the curriculums in conformity with international ones”, Ala’ Makki, the member of Parliament’s education and teaching committee told Alsumarianews. “The parliament is still waiting for the final version of the strategy in order to approve it,” he added.
International organizations had said earlier that one fifth of Iraqis between the age of 10 and 49 do not know how to write and read.
UN reports say that before 1991, there was no illiteracy in Iraq. Meanwhile the statistics of the former Parliament’s education and teaching committee point out that more than 6 million Iraqis are illiterate.
