ERITREA | New Construction on the Dahlak Islands

Quote:
A new 48 million dollar construction project is nearing completion on the Dahlak Kibir. When completed, the project will include two high luxury 850m2 villas and 50 modern villas. Since this construction project is in a remote island with scarce drinking water, the project will also include Eritrea's first desalination plant (which turns salty sea water into fresh drinking water), a wastewater treatment plant and a full power plant to operate the entire facilities.

Will try to upoload more pics later.
Thats all the info I could get for the moment, feel free to update.

P.S: Xusein, where all the Eritreans banned?

The beach is beautiful, I am sure the resort will look great.

I thought desalination plants were incredibly expensive, a nice surprise.

Interesting development. I'd like to see more renders.

I'm curious though, who's building it and for what purpose? It's really low lying too; if water levels continue to rise, that's a bad investment.

Update...

The new 48 million dollar construction project on Eritrea's Dahlak islands is nearing completion for some of the main resorts. Meanwhile, related development projects, including villas, paved roads, landscaping, and power plants are still being built throughout the Dahlak Kebir island.

There are big plans for the Dahlaks ahead, if i remember clearly this is only phase I and there are many more phases to come. I remember reading something about a new International airport to be built on the islands, which seems pointless to me as it is in close proximity to Massawa Intl. Airport. A ferry terminal seems like a more logical choice in my opinion.

Dahlak's Master Plan Expected to cost US$115 million

The Master Plan for Dahlak Kebir, the largest island on the Dahlak Archipelago, is expected to cost $115 million dollars, according to S. A. Miro, a United States and Abu Dhabi-based consulting firm.

The project will include an international airport, an industrial port, luxurious resorts and hotels with a combined 1,980 key capacity. Additionally, the development areas will be interconnected by 207 km (128 miles) of roadway.

Moreover, the project will include a planned permanent population on the island of over 10,000 inhabitants and, according to the firm, will feature its own "police, fire protection, retail, restaurant, medical, school, warehousing, storage, and light commercial facilities."

Previously, during the first phase of development on the Island, which was completed in late 2012, the project consisted of 48 luxurious bungalows, 2 villas, a helipad, roads, pools, electrical grids and desalination plants.

By building high-end development projects on Dahlak Kebir, Massawa, Ras Harab and Halibay, the government and its partners seek to attract Gulf and European tourists by featuring its pristine coastal waters as their focal attraction.

Cost: US$115 million
Status: In progress
Location: Dahlak Kebir
Architect: Gensler and Norris Design
Financed: Qatari Diar

Phase I is completed.

I really like it, but airport and port? I feel that kinds of spoils the aspect of natural beauty (I agree with you in regards to Massawa)... regardless the resort looks top notch.

Its so unnecessary. They should spend the money from this airport on Asmara's or Massawa's instead. Or build a ferry terminal like i said earlier.

Massawa already has an international airport and two different airliners using it as a base. Dahlak already has ferry terminal. Dahlak will get an international airport for direct flights from the gulf and european states (it already has a helipad). They also built desalination plants (turning seawater into fresh water). The plan is to make Dahlak self-sustainable. The Island's population will go from 1,500, to 10,000 within a few years.

I know Massawa has an airport, I'm saying use it for improvements. An international airport just for tourists is not going to keep it busy all year. 10,000 inhabitants isn't enough either. We should build smart.
