Disorder is order of the day on GST Road
![]() Traffic snarls between Guduvanchery and Perungalathur, has become the order of the day in the evening hours. A scene on GST Road recently. Photo: A. Muralitharan Traffic snarl for several hours in the evening on the most important arterial road towards Chennai has become the order of the day. Development of realty, growth of software industry, and construction of road overbridges have seen a phenomenal growth of traffic on Grand Southern Road between Tambaram and Chengalpattu over the past few years. Not only during weekends, but on weekdays, it takes several hours to negotiate the distance between Guduvanchery and Tambaram. D. R. Muthu said that a few months ago, he spent most of his time on his moped held up in long traffic snarls between Guduvanchery and Perungalathur. A resident of Ayyanchery near Guduvanchery and retail merchant of snacks, he said that many times, he was unable to reach his shop on time. Residents and representatives of civic groups around Tambaram said that the problem was due to the delay in completion of the road overbridge to replace the railway level-crossing near Vandalur railway station. Officials of the State Highways Department pointed out that a road overbridge was nearing completion to replace the railway level-crossing near Vandalur railway station. Preliminary work was on to construct a similar bridge near Urapakkam railway station. They said that with mofussil buses arriving at Perungalathur from both Chengalpattu and Tambaram directions, the road width of GST Road was not proportionate and hence the problem. They were hopeful that once the present bus shelter in Perungalathur was completed, traffic snarls on GST Road would not be as acute. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle1140656.ece

Nice pic. Isn't it SIS Safaa project? The physical location is at Guduvanchery but the project is advertised as it is in Urapakkam in their website. Crap.

Ok now I got it. The small building u see on the right hand side is the unopened shell petrol bunk. next to that you have Featherlite vaikuntam, next to that is the huge construction shown in pic which is Akshaya Belvedere. Opposite to this(not in this pic) is Sis Safaa. Am I right?

I cannot believe this is happening. Until I first saw Valanchary and M.City SEZs, I never thought that buildings greater than 3 floors will ever come up south of Tambaram. ![]() Who would go and live in these places? They are very far from the city. Have they been booked enough? What happened to Valanchary SEZ? Have they started the operations? |

Dude, Stretch between Tambaram and Chengalpattu is actually bustling with activity. Just take the 9 towns(with railway station beyond tambaram(excluding paranur and ignoring the villages surrounding these towns) - Perungalathur, Vandalur, Urapakkam, Guduvancheri, Potheri, Kattankalathur, Maraimalai Nagar, Singaperumal Koil, Chengalpattu, all are now seeing lots of residential and industrial developments esp in the past 9-10 yrs. I just did a simple population calc based on 2001 census data(rounded to nearest 1000)..Perungalathur -19000, Vandalur -13000, Urapakkam -14000, Guduvancheri - 27000, Potheri + Kattankalathur = 20000, Maraimalai Nagar= 49000, Singaperumal Koil = 8000, Chengalpattu = 63000. Total = 2,13,000 (2.13 lakh) If you add the other villages abutting/closer to this GST Road stretch like peerkanakaranai, kaatupakkam, kottamedu, mambakkam, madambakkam, adhanur, thirukachur, paranur etc they will add another 1 lakh atleast. so lets take it as 3 lakhs based on 2001 data.(chennai metro pop 65 lakhs) There had been huge developments in this stretch between 2001-2011 like sriram sez, mahindra city, estancia etc apart from other projects. all these things would have made the population 4-5 lakhs now. Quote:
* Also thanks to Maraimalai nagar industrial estate, Mahindra city, sriram SEZ these towns supply residential needs for people working in these areas. * Sadly these areas(technically areas beyond vandalur/kilambakkam) are not included in the second master plan for chennai which will prove costly in future due to unplanned developments happening now. these projects will increase the problem of drainage as there is no proper drainage system in any of the above towns. also water resources will be of strain though this whole stretch is blessed with lots of lakes * The closeness to City centre, Airport, OMR/ECR, Oragadam-Sriperumbadur all make this one of the best places to invest. People who bought lands in 80s and 90s are selling now at almost 80-150 times. (A small e.g is = my relative who bought land in 1987 at guduvancheri for 37,000 sold it for 32 laks in 2010.) * will the govt realise the potential??

Its not that such a development was unanticipated. Chengalpattu (prior to splitting) used to be the most invested district in the country (atleast in top five)Two ideas are languishing.. ITIR and MAP (Marakkanam-Arakkonam-Pulicat). Either one of these ideas will provide the basic vision for this region. Mahindras have created an ideal ecosystem to pull the city southwards. Flanked by OMR/ECR developments on one side and Oragadam-Sriperumbudur on the other side, GST is poised to be a vital engine for TN's growth. With the other interesting data wlbkng has already provided, its small wonder, this region is crying for serious infrastrucutre and proper foresight. |

@ CI- u r welcome friend
@ Satchi - By Marakanam-Arakonam-Pulicat (MAP), do you mean the the once planned Mega city on the lines of NCR? Would be great if it comes into reality but proper planning needs to be made. Otherwise it would be mess. Lets hope our future govt becomes visionary and includes this in 3rd master plan atleast.

It sure can become a reality. First thing it needs is a strong visionary person from CM's office, a bunch of groundbreaking legislations, redirect all the useless freebie money into providing infrastructure. The idea was not to make a concrete jungle in MAP, instead it called for sustainable development based on resources. It was a very forward idea. I wish its high time to revive this idea of MAP.. The current dynamics of urbanization already point in this direction.. only thing is there is no vision or guiding agency to regulate growth. |
