Location proves profitable for zone
Updated: 2012-07-10 11:22
China Daily

Lying in central Yunnan province - the passageway to Southeast Asia - the Kunming National High-tech Industries Development Zone is taking advantage of its geographic location and the presence of a large amount of natural and mineral resources in its home province to make a "big income within a small area". It also won a reward given out by the Ministry of Land and Resources early this year for the economical efficient use of land resources.

Location proves profitable for zone

About 5,400 enterprises had come to the zone by the end of 2011. Three of them had an annual income of $1.57 billion, and another 54 had an annual income of more than $1.57 million.

Called the "kingdom of nonferrous metals", Yunnan contains many great opportunities for manufacturers. The high-tech zone's nonferrous and precious metals industries had $7.8 billion in industrial output in 2011, making up more than half of the zone's total output.

Of its five branch function areas, two are related to biotechnology. The zone had nearly 600 biotech companies by the end of 2011. And the biomedicine industry there had about $2 billion worth of output in 2011, making up 15 percent of the zone's total output.

Dong Baotong, director of the high-tech zone, said work should be done to explore Yunnan's special local herbs and its unique recipes. Those could include new products made partly of Yunnan baiyao, a white powder that is used to treat open wounds, as well as other herb products such as essence oils and perfumes.

"We should make full use of this passageway to Southeast Asia to extend our bio-industry to the outside," he said, adding that the biotech zone is expected to make $11 billion in general income in 2015.

Another of the high-tech zone's new areas has been under construction in the southeast part of central Kunming since 2008. It occupies 87 square kilometers and is estimated to contain enough room for more than 60 projects. Some of those are already under way and the new area is expected to have $28.2 billion in general income by the end of 2015.

Dong said his next step will be to attend to water science and technology.

"I was inspired by the water pollution controls they use at Dianchi Lake in Kunming," he said.

The lake has been severely polluted since the 1990s. Years of maintenance and of using wetland filters to clean it have not been enough to return it to its original state.

"If we could introduce more water science and technology companies into Kunming and overcome these difficulties - and even make the water drinkable - we will be achieving something remarkable and our experience will surely benefit more people in the country," he said.

Construction fault behind SW China metro accident

A broken metro train is seen on the rail in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, Jan. 8, 2013. One driver was killed and another injured during a test run of a metro line Tuesday in Kunming. A spokesman with the municipal government said that part of the test train on the metro line derailed, causing the vehicle's heating device to fall and hit the drivers in the driver cabin. (Xinhua)

KUNMING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Substandard construction has been confirmed as the cause of Tuesday's fatal metro line accident in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, said the metro operator on Friday.

Initial investigation showed that a fireproof door fell onto the track and caused a train to derail, killing one driver and injuring another, according to a report released by Kunming Rail Transit Co., Ltd.

Contractors failed to install the fireproof doors in accordance with construction specifications, said the report.

At 9:09 a.m. on Tuesday, a test train on the metro line derailed, the ensuing collisions causing the vehicle's air conditioning device to fall and hit the drivers in their cabin.

The city's first metro line, scheduled for trial operation in February, was undergoing a non-loaded test run.

The government has set up an investigation team to probe the accident and has demanded the metro company start an overall safety check.

WiFi to cover all Kunming metro stations
China Daily Excerpt
2015-01-06

Twelve stations along Kunming metro lines 1 and 2 are now covered with a wireless local area network. Once linked, portable electronic devices will automatically connect to the WiFi every time passengers enter the metro stations, if required.

The WiFi coverage project is under construction. It is expected that passengers can access the free WiFi everywhere in the stations and in the metro coaches. The bandwidth will exceed 400 megabytes when the metro is running and reach 1 gigabyte when static, allowing nearly 1,000 passengers to exchange data or connect to the internet.

At present, the WiFi service covers 12 stations.

Sino-Thai accord reached on rail project engineering
2015-03-14
China Daily Excerpt

China and Thailand are to cooperate on a prominent form of contracting agreement relating to building a railway linking the two countries.

The agreement, known as an engineering procurement construction pattern, will cover a standard gauge dual-track system.

Further details on investment and funding are likely to be finalized in May, Thai officials said.

The two delegations met this week in Nong Khai in northeastern Thailand for the third round of talks on the Sino-Thai railway cooperation project.

Reports said officials visited Nong Khai to inspect locations for the project. Nong Khai province has high potential to become an interchange for passengers connecting between trains from Kunming in southwestern China to services running to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

The long-anticipated project, which will see trains running at up to 180 km an hour, has been postponed because of political turbulence in Thailand.

The signing of the latest agreement was witnessed by Premier Li Keqiang and his Thai counterpart, Prayut Chan-o-cha, in December during the fifth Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation summit in Bangkok.

Under the agreement, Chinese companies will also design and build rail routes to ease transportation into and out of Bangkok-the second-largest city in Southeast Asia after Jakarta. The 734-km project will connect Nong Khai province with the Thai capital. A 133-km branch line will be built to the eastern Thai province of Rayong.
