New boring machines to boost Doha Metro construction
Saturday, 7 June 2014 10:47 AM

Qatar Railways Company, the firm overseeing the construction of the country's rail network, has received four more tunnel boring machines to work on phase one of the Doha Metro project.

The four machines were manufactured by Germany's Herrenknecht and will be used for the Red Line North and South Underground projects, a statement said.

Qatar Rail said it is awaiting the delivery of a further 16 boring machines which will arrive in a Qatar over the coming months, to be used between the Red Line North, Red Line South, Green Line and Gold Line Underground projects.

Each machine will travel a distance of between 7-9km and will take approximately two years to complete their respective journeys.

Their average speed will be between 12m per day to 21m per day, depending on ground conditions. Daily excavation quantity will be over 600 cubic metres, with an estimated predicted total excavation quantity of over 5,000,000 cubic metres.

The scope of work for Red Line North Underground comprises the design and construction of about 13.4km of twin-bored tunnel, including seven underground stations, between the proposed Msheireb Underground Station and Doha Golf Course via Doha West Bay.

The tunnels will be built at an average depth of 20 metres below ground.

Red Line South Underground extends from Msheireb in the North to Hamad International Airport in the South and its scope of work includes seven underground stations and the design and construction of about 14km of twin-bored tunnel to be built at an average depth of 25 metres below ground.

Lusail tram contract signed
24 Jun 2014

The city of Lusail is being developed on a waterfront site to the north of Doha

QATAR: Railway project promoter Qatar Rail has awarded a consortium of Alstom and QDVC the rolling stock and railway systems contract for the construction of a four-line tram network in Lusail. Opening is scheduled for 2018.

The contract was signed in Paris on June 23 in the presence of Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and French President François Hollande.

Alstom’s share of the contract is worth €450m, and includes trackwork, signalling, substations, catenary, the APS ground-level power supply system and 35 Citadis trams.

The city of Lusail is being developed on a waterfront site to the north of Doha, and is planned to house 200 000 people. The Lusail Light Rail Transit network will connect with the future Doha metro and national rail networks, and have a total length of 33 km, including 7 km underground, with 37 stops.

The 100% low-floor Citadis trams will be 32 m long, and offer 'high-end comfort' with passenger information and security systems onboard and at stops. Lusail LRT will be the second tramway in the Gulf region to use APS technology, after the Al Sufouh line in Dubai where testing is now underway for opening later this year.

Options for a further 32 Citadis trams could take the total value of the contract to Alstom to €750m. Several Alstom sites will be involved in the project, including Le Creusot, Ornans, Tarbes and Villeurbanne. 'This new order in the Middle East demonstrates the success of our global strategy and the strong links we have with the region', said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, President of Alstom Transport.

Civil works partner QDVC is a 51:49 joint venture of Qatari Diar and Vinci Construction Grands Projets. QDVC began earthworks for the cut-and-cover tunnels in 2009, and in 2011 was awarded a €374m design and build contract covering the eight underground stops, a viaduct over a motorway and preliminary works for the depot.

Doha tram feels the heat
17 Apr 2015

QATAR: Testing is underway at the Rail Tec Arsenal climate chamber in Wien to verify that the 19 Avenio trams which are being built by Siemens for the Education City People Mover in Doha will be able to cope with the extreme heat and high humidity found in Qatar.

The 27 m long, three-section, 2 550 mm wide Avenio trams will have heavy-duty air-conditioning systems and special sun shades on the roof to protect against the high temperatures and intense desert light.

During the tests, humidifiers and heating pads are being used inside the tram to simulate the future passengers, while the chamber can provide artificial sunlight of up to 1 000 W/m2. This makes it possible to replicate typical Qatari winter and summer conditions, verifying that the onboard climate controls can keep a fully-loaded tram at a temperature of 25°C and with sufficient fresh air despite ambient temperatures of more than 40°C and 30% humidity
