Burma

Myanmar (also known as Burma or Birma) is a country in south east Asia extending from the southeastern end of the Himalaya mountain range southwards into the Indian ocean. The terrain is to a large extent mountaineous, with only the central region around the Ayeyarwady river being plain. Myanmar extends for 2000 km from north to south and has widely varying climatic regions, ranging from a temperate and fresh north to a tropical south. The first identifiable civilisation in the region is the one of the Mon, who by the mid-900s BC were the dominant power in southern Myanmar. Later a number of kingdoms developed in the region. These were first unified by the kingdom of Taungoo in the 16th century. In the 19th century the British conquered Myanmar and incorporated it into the British Raj. Myanmar became independent in 1948 initially as a democratic republic. Following the coup by the military in 1962, Myanmar has been ruled by the military ever since. Its economy nowadays is underdeveloped, also due to the economic sanctions imposed by the international community. When visiting Myanmar one gets the impression that the country is like Thailand was 30-40 years ago: little traffic in the streets, old cars, most men wearing traditional sarongs, very little crime. The capital of Myanmar is Yangon.

Hard to believe this thread received little interest so far!

I have always been wondering about Myanmar. It would have not been too difficult to see it to me since I am a common visitor to SE Asia (Thailand) but somehow never quite made it. It's bizarre that such an interesting country and culture is struggling so much given it is situated in one of the world's most dynamic regions (same applies to Laos and Cambodia, btw). Thank you very much for the photos. I appreciate it very much since I am very much interested in that part of the world and we definitely do not get to see it much over SSC.

Burma is beautiful.
If only the country will be freely open to international tourists just like what Cambodia did several years ago, I'd love to visit it someday.

Question:

Is there an interest for many new and very recent photos of Burma / Myanmar? Since I recently travelled the country I brought a big photo collection home.

Where is the focus of interest? I could show the traditional and very beautiful buddhist country with its ancient heritages or I could focus on the modern and fast changing urban landscape?

A small subset of the changing landscape of Myanmar, especially of Mandalay is already posted here in Skyscrapercity, that is in the in the Skyline rating thread (SkyscraperCity > World Forums > Rate Our Talls > Rate Our Skylines > Mandalay - Myanmar)

Here is the direct link: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...1&postcount=53

Another couple of posts cover a photographic display of Myanmar's airports. You can find thm in the Myanmar aviation thread (SkyscraperCity > Asian Forums > Asian Skyscraper Forums > General Asian Discussion > Urban Development & Infrastructure > Myanmar Aviation)

Yangon airport: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...1&postcount=12

Mandalay airport: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...5&postcount=13

Bagan airport: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...1&postcount=14

Heho airport: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...1&postcount=15

What I treasure most, however, are the photographic impressions of the true cultural heritage of the Golden Land, such as the pagodas in Yangon, most of all the Shwedagon Pagoda; Bagan, Mandalay, Pindaya, Inle Lake, Bago, and the Golden Rock, that is the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. These places are surely some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. Myanmar is truly a land full of wonders. So, if there is interest in such photos, please let me know and I will post them here. The photos are all from end of November/beginning of December, 2010.
